James's obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved James H. Brooks, age 55, after a brave battle with cancer. On Thursday, February 10, 2022, he died peacefully at his San Francisco home with family by his side. James was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Lexington, KY where he attended Lexington Catholic High School. He was an athlete who ran cross country, and he loved basketball so much that at one point, he concurrently played on three teams. “Brooksy,” as he was affectionately known by numerous friends, moved to the Bay Area to work for Oracle Corporation after earning a computer science degree from Brown University. His Oracle career, which spanned nearly 30 years, consisted of many meaningful connections with colleagues whom he regarded as his work family. James maintained close ties with his parents over the years, and they were very proud of him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Dina, daughter Chloe, step-son Chase, mother Doris, sister Moya, and niece AJ, as well as a large extended family and countless friends. Preceding him in death was his father, James H. Brooks.

James was a devoted father who especially enjoyed coaching Chloe’s and Chase’s elementary school basketball and soccer teams. Motivating young players to do their best, cheering them on, strategizing with other parent coaches - he loved it all. He was happiest spending time with his family, immersed in friendly weekend competitions on the field and court, venturing on hikes to explore undiscovered places, taking in the magic of Oahu, and road-tripping to California beach towns, amusement parks or wherever the collective mood would strike.

James was blessed beyond measure to have extraordinary friendships with the Lambda Xi chapter brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi whose ties run deep. By extension, our entire family is blessed as well.

James was a lifelong learner whose inquisitive nature led to a variety of pastimes. One of his newer hobbies was playing the ukulele. Prior to his illness, he devoted his spare time to teaching himself how to play “If I Ain’t Got You” for Dina. It was their wedding song.

James touched lives with his positive spirit, warm smile and hearty laugh. He was fiercely loyal and kind. He will remain in our hearts forever. Our family is grateful for the condolences and expressions of love we have received.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
