The Carreiro sisters (Margaret, Ilda & Elaine) and the Musto sisters (Fran, Diana & Tina) grew up together a couple of houses apart. We shared a wonderful childhood together, played together, went to school together, went to each other's birthday parties, and remained lifelong friends. Our mothers were friends until they died three months apart. There are countless memories of our time together that I will always cherish. My sisters and I grieve along with Jeff, Brandy, Amberly, Margaret, Elaine, her beloved grandchildren, and her nephew Josh. My deepest condolences to you all.

Ilda embodied using knowledge in the advocacy for children. She had a command of both literacy and child development that was a super power.

Ilda held an unwavering stand; always on the side of the child. She employed a same side of the table approach (as long as conversations remained student centered.) 😁

Ilda was relentless in her quest for gaining understanding. She always sought more information and inspired those around her to achieve the “aha moment”. Ilda listened, she challenged, she reflected and followed up.

Ilda guided struggling students to prove that they could find success. She lit up when traction was gained and her commitment to the student, the family and the team continued even when her direct involvement ceased.

Ilda had passion; an exuberance for teaching and learning that was electric. Learning from her, and working with and alongside her, was both a privilege and a treasure.

I will miss Dr Ilda King!

My memories of this woman go way back to childhood school days especially High School days where she was such a high achiever which followed her throughout her life. I had the opportunity to get to know her much better these past three years where we shared lots of laughter, funny jokes and family stories. She was a brave woman that’s for sure and she will be missed.

I first started hearing about Ilda in the 4th grade, when my Mother, a teacher at the Brown School, learned about Ilda started telling me what a nice friend she would make when we met in the 5th grade.  We did meet the following year, and immediately became 'frenemies' - going head-to-head in a reading contest (we tied, in the end).  Clearly, her love of reading was already in place.  We remained classmates and friendly thereafter, and kept in casual touch over the years, through all her academic achievements and family milestones.  Although I'd hate to argue with her own words, I don't think I've ever seen anyone 'live' with breast cancer quite so 'unwillingly', shall we say?  Having been on the receiving end of her daily blow-by-blow missives full of research and technical jargon, and having witnessed her head-on assault and amazingly quick recovery, I would dare to use the word 'warrior' in her case - as I would about nearly anything Ilda threw her energies into.  I was tickled when she called a few years ago out of the blue just to tell me she still had the glass canisters I gave her as a wedding gift (how could she even remember???).  I still have mine, too, and now think of her every time I use them.  Her energy and enthusiasm was infectious and it's no surprise that she could instill that in others.  Of all her achievements - her daughters, Jeff, and her grandkids were her biggest source of pride, and she never hesitated to share their latest news.  It's such a terrible shame that she's left us so soon, but her memories will live on in the lives of so many.  I hope we all make her proud.
