Words seem inadequate when trying to capture the extraordinary spirit of Ilda. She was a force to be reckoned with- brilliant, kind, tenacious, loving and generous. Ilda selflessly shared those gifts of hers with the world simply to make it a better place. The magic of Ilda was her ability to empower others to be their best and often she saw their potential long before we recognized it in ourselves . Her breadth of knowledge on so many topics never ceased to amaze me. Without a doubt, there was never a conversation where I didn’t walk away having learnt something new. Who ever would have thought there could be so much to learn about guinea pigs ;-)??? Ilda was a colossal presence in every space she entered and I just feel so very fortunate that we were able to spend some of our time on earth together. My heart aches at the loss of Ilda’s physical presence, but I will carry a piece of her spirit in my heart and take some comfort knowing that her impact on myself and the world will continue to shine bright. Jeff, Brandy and Amberly- Sending you all so much love- xo

Ilda and I went to Somerville Hugh together and shared our love of children
A small group of Somerville girls got together periodically to catch up. We also reconnected when I had the pleasure of having her grandsons,Cameron and Ryan come to my preschool and meet her daughter,Brandt
I too have a grandson named Cam so we had a play date together and a mother and daughter breakfast together. Making new memories was amazing
She will truly be missedā¤ļø
I am so sorry for the passing of Ilda. She gave so much of herself to her family and community. She always put a smile on my face whenever I saw here. Chris Greenwood šŸ˜˜ā¤ļø
I never had the pleasure of meeting Ilda though I've long known her daughter Brandy. But after reading about her life and seeing the same delightful qualities in Brandy, I can only imagine what a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife, teacher, mentor, and friend, she must have been. My condolences.

Ilda taught me everything I know to be an effective reading specialist. She was my mentor and my friend. I loved her dearly. The most important thing she taught me was to build genuine caring relationships with the students. Children with reading challenges need to know that you have confidence in them as they build confidence in themselves as they learn new skills. She modeled this well. One of our shared students told me Dr. Ilda was the first person who made him feel smart. What a blessing she was. I will be praying for her beautiful spirit to continue to be with me as I teach my students.
With much love and tremendous appreciation,
Laurie Blake

I heard this news on my way into Boston to celebrate our son Desi’s birthday. I was and still am deeply saddened. She was an absolutely incredible woman who I admired so much!! She not only touched our lives, my husband and I believe she saved our two youngest son’s lives. She came into our lives at a time when we (family and teachers and neuropsychologist) were desperate to find help for our son Desi. We felt like we tried everything and he still could not read. Ask him any question he knew the answer but could not read or write āœļø. He was depressed and unconfident and worst of all scared and angry. We hired a special education lawyer assuming that we would be fighting to have him removed from the school system and placed somewhere else. The lawyer knew about Dr. King and she said will you please let me ask the district to hire Dr. King to come out and assess his learning style. We agreed.. we’ll long story short 6 months later (lots of hard work) he was reading at grade level. Ilda not only worked with Desi and his teachers she also attended all IEP meetings and she made us all work as a team. She commended us all for our hard work and she guided us with love and care. We became a wheel and we did it. She trained some amazing teachers who are now helping other children right here in north reading. When our youngest son entered kindergarten the teachers began to notice that he was having similar difficulties and they immediately called Dr. King to step in. She did and it worked! Louis didn’t have to suffer as long as Desi because we had all learned from Ilda King. I know that I will never forget her. I know that I leaned from her and that I will try to follow her lead when it comes to selflessly helping others with determination and passion. ā¤ļø Heaven has truly gained an angel šŸ˜‡

During our doctoral days, a group of us spent a weekend in Plymouth. At one point, Ilda came out of the bedroom dressed like a fortune teller. She then sat us down, and one by one, told us about our futures. Not sure one of us actually heard what she said because we belly laughed the entire time. I had the ridiculous good fortune to call Ilda my friend. Long live her humor, tenacity, and refusal to listen to bs.

I'm sorry that your family and the world has lost a brilliant parent, mentor, educator, leader, and friend. Her heart and energy will be greatly missed; however, her extraordinary "lessons" will live on through generations of educators and the students for whom her practices benefited. šŸ’–šŸ’– With gratitude, Lori M.
Our thoughts and prayers to the family of cousin Ilda. What a wonderful giving person she was.
Personally, through Ilda’s mentoring and friendship, she helped to shape me into the professional I am today. She spent countless hours with me sharing her pedagogy on literacy instruction and child development, through this small window; we worked together to convert her techniques and pedagogy into curriculum formats for teachers to use successfully in the classroom. Each and every time I ever left a conversation, consultation, had a friendly chat, read a response back from an email, or had a text exchange, a more in-depth understanding with a profound admiration for the work she did in all walks of her life was gained…not only as a consultant, but as a mother, grandmother and friend. Overall, I have extreme gratification for what she has taught me, through her contributions, I hope to continue on the legacy of her work and to share what she so passionately dedicated her life to with others; the work of helping others succeed. She will be so greatly missed.
Although I have not seen Ilda in over 50 years, we became Facebook friends at some point in the last decade or so. I grew up not too far from Ilda and we attended school together from kindergarten through high school. In our Senior Year at SHS….I worked with Ilda on the school newspaper, Abraxas. I do believe she was the editor and was the radical force behind this political anti war and early feminist work. It was an important effort to us!
I am so sorry for those close to her….too soon, too soon.
I'm so sad to hear of Ilda's passing. I took several of her courses and she mentored me at one of my jobs. I loved working with her and had the greatest respect for her. I will always remember her fondly.
Ilda has left a legacy to her children and grandchildren that will keep her alive in our hearts for generations. Her wisdom and patience is only surpassed by her humor, thoughtfulness and love.

Ilda King you will forever be remembered for your educational brilliance and mentoring you provided the teachers, para professionals and school systems. I will be indebted for the mentoring you imparted not only to me, but the entire SEEM Collaborative. You never saw a child as failing to read, only that they needed to be given an opportunity to find their own path to succeed. We both shared the experience of breast cancer, and you gave me encouragement that we do not have to be defined by it. When I said I had lost some of my word recall, you replied that we may have lost some of it, but we had so much to begin with. This was certainly a true statement in describing yourself. Thank you for being such a champion of education.

Dear, sweet, passionate, brilliant and edgy Ilda, your boundless passion for life and learning will live forever in my heart. We worked together for years, and each time I saw you I was stunned by your amazing mind. .
Your wonderful family, the center of your life. I send you my tears today, but I know that soon you will be celebrating the years of joy and laughter and resilience despite the pain that Ilda shared with you.
I miss you, Ilda.

I am so sorry to hear of Ilda's passing. She was one heck of a woman. She will be greatly missed by so many. Please know my thoughts are with all of you at this sad time. Christie Wiliamson
Sending sincere condolences to all who knew and loved Dr. Ilda. In my role as Director of Special Education in the North Middlesex Regional School District, I came to admire and love this incredibly passionate, intelligent and kind woman.
As I was retiring and Ilda was completing her work at NM, I gifted her with a statue for her reading garden. She was so touched that it brought tears to my eyes. I’m hoping it remains as a tribute and inspiration to her beautiful grandchildren.šŸ™šŸ™šŸ˜˜
