Hersh's obituary
Hersh Markusfeld, 86, of Mill Valley, CA, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024, with family members nearby.
Hersh was born on June 29, 1937 to Joseph and Mona Markusfeld in New York City. After graduating from New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, NY he went on to study Math at MIT in Cambridge, MA.
After college graduation, he landed his first job as an actuary for Mutual of New York in NYC. It was there that he met the love of his life, Susanne Saeger, and they wed in 1963. They went on to have three children, Karen, Robert, and Elizabeth. They moved to California in 1974, where Hersh embarked upon a long, successful career in insurance, contributing greatly to the creation and growth of the Long Term Care Insurance industry. Hersh spent his final years in Denver near his oldest daughter, Karen. She would take Hersh around to many of the wonderful spots in Denver that he loved, such as the Denver Botanical Gardens and the Denver Art Museum. Hersh also was able to take senior classes at the local college during this time.
Hersh was a force of nature. He was always rooting for the underdog, and wanted desperately to make the world a fairer place. Hersh loved music, and was a very talented piano player. He loved sports, and loved playing golf (poorly), and was an avid bettor on most anything that moved. He, also, really treasured his friends and had many. Hersh and Sue were able to eventually move to their dream home high in the Mill Valley hills on the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, and took some wonderful trips in later years. Hersh was predeceased by Susanne in 2005. He is survived by Karen and her husband, Bill Taylor and their children, Ryan and Kaitlyn Taylor. He is also survived by Liz and her cat, Fluffy. And he is survived by Rob, and his wife, Brittany Keyes and daughter, Alexandra Markusfeld.
