Henry Shelton Douglas was born February 8, 1941, in Bryan, Texas to the late Edward Wadsworth Douglas Sr. and Willie Mae Douglas. At the age of two, his family moved to San Francisco, California. Henry graduated from Mission High School in San Francisco in 1958. In 1959, Henry entered the Air Force and in 1963 he met and married Brenda E. Staff. To that union, five children were born.
