Honey's obituary
Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Helene ‘Honey’ Nelson passed peacefully on August 8th, 2024, in her home, with her daughter Julie by her side. Born in Brooklyn, NY on December 3, 1931, Honey graduated from James Madison High School and went on to attend both Hunter College as well as the School of Art and Design at the Pratt Institute. She moved to Stamford, CT in 1955 with her best friend and husband of 50 years, Alvin Nelson, who passed in 1996.
After making Stamford her home, she had two daughters, Julie and Abby, and was an active member in the community. A lifelong lover of the arts, she was involved in Stamford’s Stage Door theater productions, along with her husband and family. She was a longtime member in the Stamford chapter of Hadassah and sang in the Temple Beth El choir. In her free time, could be found enjoying or attending live opera and ballet.
A graphic designer, she spent 30 years as Art Director at Stamford’s Ferguson Library. Honey was also an artist herself, who enjoyed endeavors in all media from painting, to crochet, to ceramics. She was an avid reader of the New York Times, often reading the paper cover to cover and doing the entire Sunday crossword puzzle in ink. Those who knew her well knew she had a great sense of humor, was a night owl, and was tech-savvy into her 90s.
Honey was predeceased by her parents, Alexander and Billie Mendelson, sister Lenore Itzkowitz, and her husband, Alvin. She is survived by her daughters Julie and Abby, grandchildren Eric, Daniel, Rachel, and Katie, and great grandchildren Jayla, Erin, Jordan, Eli, and Audrey.
