Helen's obituary

Helen Louise Weyerbacher Christian, age 70, passed away March 1, 2026.

Helen was born April 9, 1955, in Evansville, Indiana to the late Bill and Helen Weyerbacher. She grew up in Boonville, Indiana and always considered that to be her hometown. Helen is survived by her sons Bill Christian (Jenny) and Dr. Ray Christian. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Lyla and Lucy Belle Christian, her sister Julie Reeder (Mike), brother John Weyerbacher (Pauley), brother Ken Weyerbacher, niece Dr. Elizabeth Bryant (Richard), nephew Dr. Jonathan Weyerbacher (Hanna), Benjamin Reeder (Crystal), and her former husband, Ron Christian. Helen was preceded in death by parents and her sister Gayle Peters (David).

In addition to being a wonderful mother, prior to giving birth to her sons Helen had a career in Indianapolis, Indiana as a manufacturer’s representative for the sound and security industry. Helen was a prolific volunteer and among her many activities led efforts for the Deaconess Foundation’s annual golf outing, as well as for the Vanderburgh County Women’s Fund. Helen served many years as a member of the Evansville Day School’s board of trustees. Helen was a long-time member of the Evansville Country Club and a member of the ladies’ nine- and eighteen-hole golf leagues. Helen began playing golf in her forties and developed a true love of the game and the relationships it fostered. Over the years, she was a constant presence on the course.

When her sons were younger, Helen was an active participant in their summer Evansville Country Club swim meet activities. You could find her at every meet timing the participants and cheering on Bill and Ray and their teammates. During her college years, Helen was a swimming coach and instructor at Christmas Lake Village, which provided her with many lifetime memories.

As Bill and Ray grew up, driving one of her many minivans Helen was on the road constantly carting them from one activity to another. She had a lifelong love of learning that she shared with her children, and would go above and beyond assisting the boys with their studies. Her constant presence in their lives greatly shaped their character and set an example of parenting that both will continue to share with their children.

Helen graduated from Boonville High School in 1973, where she was the salutatorian. While in high school, with help from her father, who was an attorney, Helen was pivotal in the promotion and development of official girls’ sporting activities at Boonville High School. Helen received a bachelor’s degree from Hanover College in 1977. While attending Hanover College, an excellent athlete, Helen was a member of the school’s volleyball team. Throughout her life, Helen managed to maintain close relationships with her fellow students from high school and college.

Helen will be deeply missed by her family and friends but will never be forgotten as she created a lifetime of memories for those who remain. Her presence, laughter, and love of a good story will never be forgotten.

Helen’s family would like to thank all of the medical staff at Deaconess Health, and particularly Dr. David Sullivan and Katey Andrews, for their excellent care and compassion during her illness.

Her Celebration of Life will be held on March 26 at Evansville Country Club from 5 - 7:30 PM. All are welcome. Food and drinks will be provided.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vanderburgh County Women’s Fund (https://alliance.fcsuite.com/… ).
