I'm a GrC '87 alum (DRT) and I remember Dr. Levenson in my freshman year in 1983 as a true educational leader and set the foundation in the department to what it is today. I remember is faithful admin, Rosemary, was always kept busy with his calendar. He was constantly coming and going in his office with papers in his hands taking care of business. His philosophy propelled me to get involved in UGS where I was a manager for typesetting and pre-press, a member of TAGA, Mat Pica Pi, and the Shakespeare Museum. Thank you for my formative years as a student. It has made me who I am today in my career.

I still cannot believe Harvey is gone.. He was such an amazing person with a keen sometimes quirky sense of humor.. Harvey was instrumental in helping with the publishing of my husband's book and all the connections after.. we will always remember him fondly.
Our deepest sympathy to the family..

Many years ago now, Harvey stepped forward to accept the role of interim chair for Journalism during an especially dysfunctional time in the department. With his no nonsense, steely grace, he helped right a ship that may well have gone under without him. As the only female TT faculty member in this historically male department, Harvey quickly became my mentor, my support, and finally a cherished friend. Did I mention he took on the journalism chair assignment while continuing to chair GRC? Today the department flourishes because of him.

I was so very sorry to learn about Harvey's passing. He was truly a trail blazer! Someone who led with great empathy, creativity and wisdom. I sending all my love to Barbara and the rest of the family as they mourn the loss of their beloved spouse, father, grandfather, and friend. Rest easy Harvey. Thanks for making this world a better place for so many of us.

I joined Cal Poly in 2006 as an outside chair in the College of Liberal Arts and got to know Harvey in my capacity as somebody trying to figure out the "system." He was enormously helpful in this regard. When chairs were asked for reports from their department, Harvey always spoke glowingly of his colleagues. He was never afraid to disagree with people but always provided cogent reasons for doing so. He was truly a model.
His many online contributions to the "inclusivity group" at Cal Poly were valued. He continued to advocate for the issues important to him -- widely and vocally.
We will miss him greatly.

The only reason I have a GrC degree is because he cared enough to keep my feet to fire and bet me a bottle of wine to challenge me to finish my senior project. 37 years later this past March I met Harvey and Barbara for lunch and he showed up with that bottle of wine. I got to tell him how important he was to me and so many others he mentored. Harvey was a force of nature and I'm so grateful to have known him. The night I heard he passed away I shared that bottle of wine with others who knew him and through our tears we toasted to his legacy.
