A Legacy Built on Knowledge and Dedication

The world of graphic communication has lost one of its most distinguished educators and advocates. Dr. Harvey R. Levenson's remarkable journey through academia and industry exemplifies a life devoted to advancing knowledge, nurturing students, and elevating an entire profession. Harvey was the longest running department head at Cal Poly, steering the Graphic Communication department for 30 years! We invite you to learn more about Harvey, and to participate in his celebration of life August 21, 2025 at Cal Poly (or virtual).

The Scholar's Path

Harvey’s commitment to education was evident in his pursuit of excellence at every level. His academic achievements paint the portrait of a man who understood that true expertise comes from continuous learning. From his foundational Associate of Applied Science degree in graphic arts and advertising technology at New York City College of Technology to his Bachelor of Science in printing from the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology, Harvey built a solid foundation in his chosen field.

But he didn't stop there. His Master of Science in printing management from South Dakota State University demonstrated his understanding that technical knowledge must be paired with leadership skills. The culmination of his academic journey—a Ph.D. in rhetoric and communication from the University of Pittsburgh—revealed his deep appreciation for the power of effective communication, a skill that would serve him throughout his career as an educator and industry leader.

Pioneer and Institution Builder

Before joining Cal Poly in 1983, where he would spend decades shaping future generations of graphic communication professionals, Harvey displayed the entrepreneurial spirit that would define his career. As founder and chair of the Division of Graphics, Design, and Communication at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, he demonstrated his ability to build educational programs from the ground up. His earlier role as Associate Director of Technical Services for the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF) showcased his unique position bridging the worlds of education and industry—a perspective that would prove invaluable throughout his career.

Wisdom Shared and Preserved

Dr. Levenson's dedication to preserving and sharing knowledge extended beyond the classroom. As an active member of the Ben Franklin Honor Society, he took on the meaningful task of organizing the compilation and publishing of three "Book of Wisdom" editions. These volumes, featuring essays from accomplished professionals on achieving success and fulfillment, reflect Harvey's belief that wisdom should be shared across generations. Through this work, he ensured that the insights of industry leaders would continue to inspire and guide future professionals.

Recognition of Excellence

The numerous awards and honors bestowed upon Harvey throughout his career speak to the profound impact he had on both education and industry. The Graphic Arts Technical Foundation Education Council recognized his contributions with their "Award of Excellence," while the U.S. Government Publishing Office honored him with their "Distinguished Service Award."

Perhaps most meaningful was the creation of "The Technical Association of the Graphic Arts Dr. Harvey R. Levenson Student Paper Award," ensuring that his commitment to student achievement would continue to inspire excellence in perpetuity. His recognition as "Educator of the Year" by the Printing Industries Association of Southern California in 2004, along with the Jack Simich Educator of the Year Award, highlighted his exceptional ability to connect with and inspire students.

The establishment of "The Dr. Harvey R. Levenson Excellence in Graphic Communication Endowment" at Cal Poly upon his retirement stands as a testament to the lasting impact of his work. This endowment ensures that his dedication to excellence in graphic communication education will continue to benefit students for generations to come.

Transforming Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department

Dr. Levenson's impact on Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department was nothing short of transformational. From his arrival in 1983, he worked tirelessly to ensure that the curriculum remained cutting-edge and relevant to industry needs, consistently updating course content to reflect technological advances and market demands. His commitment to hands-on learning was evident in his successful efforts to secure equipment donations from industry partners, ensuring that students had access to the latest technology and could graduate with practical, applicable skills.

As an instructor, Harvey's approach went far beyond traditional teaching methods. He understood that education was about building careers, not just imparting knowledge. His mentorship extended to helping students navigate their professional paths, connecting them with industry opportunities, and providing the guidance needed to launch successful careers. His classroom became a launching pad for countless professionals who would go on to make their own mark in the graphic communication field.

Perhaps one of his most significant contributions was the establishment of a research institute that served as a vital bridge between academia and industry. This innovative platform allowed industry professionals to learn from faculty expertise while simultaneously providing faculty with real-world insights that enhanced their teaching and research. The institute exemplified Harvey's vision of education as a dynamic, two-way exchange between theory and practice.

Dr. Levenson's commitment to faculty development was equally impressive. He understood that exceptional education required exceptional educators, and he worked diligently to create opportunities for faculty professional growth. His efforts helped establish a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the department, ensuring that both faculty and students benefited from the latest developments in the field.

Among his most enduring contributions was the development of what became known as the most influential advisory board at Cal Poly. This board, comprised of industry leaders and experts, provides invaluable guidance on curriculum development, industry trends, and career opportunities for students. The board's influence helped ensure that Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department remains at the forefront of educational excellence and industry relevance.

A Life of Purpose

The 2013 Frederick D. Kagy Life Achievement Award from the International Graphic Arts Education Association represented the capstone recognition of a career dedicated to advancing graphic communication education worldwide. This honor, along with his induction into various honor societies and receipt of awards like the New York City College of Technology Gamma Epsilon Tau Golden Key Award, reflects a life lived with purpose and distinction.

Lasting Impact

Harvey’s legacy extends far beyond the awards on his wall or the degrees after his name. His true monument lies in the countless students he inspired, the programs he built, and the profession he helped elevate. Through his teaching, his industry involvement, and his commitment to sharing wisdom across generations, he created ripples that will continue to influence the field of graphic communication for years to come.

His life reminds us that true success is measured not just in personal achievement, but in the positive impact we have on others and the legacy we leave behind. Dr. Levenson's dedication to education, his commitment to excellence, and his generous spirit in sharing knowledge with others serve as an inspiration to all who follow in his footsteps.

A Devoted Family Man

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Levenson's greatest pride came from his role as a devoted husband and father. His unwavering love and dedication to his wife Barbara formed the foundation of a partnership that supported and enriched every aspect of his life. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, intellectual curiosity, and the values that would guide their family through life's journey.

As a father to his two sons, Mark and Damien, Harvey brought the same passion for nurturing growth that he displayed in the classroom. He understood that being a parent meant being a teacher, mentor, and cheerleader all at once. His sons witnessed firsthand the principles he taught professionally—the importance of education, hard work, integrity, and service to others—lived out daily in their family life. The lessons he imparted extended far beyond academic knowledge, encompassing the character traits and values that would serve them throughout their lives.

In celebrating his life, we honor not just a distinguished educator and industry leader, but a man who understood that the greatest gift we can give is to help others reach their full potential—whether in the classroom, in the industry, or around the family dinner table. Dr. Harvey R. Levenson's influence will continue to shape the world of graphic communication through the lives he touched and the standards of excellence he established, while his legacy of love and devotion will live on through Barbara, Mark, and Damien (his sons), and Vanessa, Brianna, Alec and Marcus (his grandchildren).
