Hannah's obituary
Hannah "Sue" Murphy, known affectionately as "Dobro Sue" but who preferred Hannah, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2018. Born on June 29, 1940, at Urbana, Illinois, Sue attended and graduated schools in Urbana and Champaign. She was married to Joseph Ripley and later to Cliff Murphy and is mother to two sons, Jeffrey and Dave. Coming from a large family including seven brothers and two sisters, Sue lived a life full of passion and purpose. She leaves behind her two sisters, while all the brothers preceded her in death. Also surviving are her two sons and two grandsons.
Sue's love for music, especially her talent with the Dobro guitar, brought joy to countless people. A major triumph for Sue in 1998 was the production of a music album called "Overdue," featuring her along with the famous guitarist Josh Graves on Dobros. She also was instrumental in creating and managing the Bluegrass Association Newsletter in Northwestern Washington State. For many years she served as a Certified Public Accountant, helping people with accounting and bookkeeping.
Never one to rest on her laurels, Sue in later life mastered a completely new art form when she took up designing and creating Victorian Lampshades and started the Hannah Murphy Lampshades business online; her site can be visited at www.lampshademaker.com. Her gorgeous creations are legendary and have been featured in various films. She also taught others how to create beautiful shades, sharing her wealth of knowledge and creative talent.
Hannah's memory will be cherished by her loved ones and the music community. Her life was a beautiful melody that will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she touched.
