Glenn's obituary

Beloved father, grandfather, father-in-law, partner and friend Glenn Paul Volk passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, following a four year battle with lung cancer. He was 73 years old.

Glenn was born on June 23, 1948 in Bellingham, MA to Paul & Barbara Volk. He grew up in the simplicity of the 1950s in a close-knit family that included his sisters Bette Burns and Barbara Malvin and many aunts, uncles and cousins. His good, old-fashioned fun might have included sneaking cigarettes behind the house and “borrowing” his father’s car for a joyride into Boston on a school day. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1966 where he was Class President, an honor roll student, and a member of the basketball and tennis teams.

Always passionate about music, Glenn received his degree in Music Education from UMass Lowell in 1970. He was admired by his students as a high school band teacher in Wareham, MA, prior to launching his own carpentry and home improvement business. He was proud to build a business based on integrity, quality, and customer referrals. His love of music remained a constant in his life. He kept many instruments in the house, encouraged his children and grandchildren in their musical pursuits, and was a trombonist in the Waltham American Legion Marching Band.

Glenn married Susan (Atwood) Volk in 1975. Together they raised their four children on three acres in Holliston, MA. During this time, Glenn is remembered for the days when the pool water was warm enough for him to swim, hours spent on his ride-on lawnmower with one of his children on his lap, his dedication as a Boy Scout leader and member of the Holliston Lions Club, and his many finished and unfinished projects around the house.

Glenn was a loving, patient and supportive father who never missed a dance recital, show or concert. He was always available to give home improvement advice or paint a room in his children’s homes. As a grandfather, Glenn reveled in reading to his grandchildren and fishing on the pond behind his house. In his personal time, he loved the serenity of fishing and boating, reading thrillers by Crichton, Clancy and King, the sense of freedom and thrill in a motorcycle ride, laughing at a good bathroom joke, and cheering on Boston’s sports teams.

Glenn is survived by his longtime companion and best friend, Marcia Smith-Arsenault, his four children and their significant others, Sarah & Matt Kovalakides, Lindsay & Scott Kilpatrick, Kimberly & Corey Peay, and Dan Volk & Kaitlin LaPlante, his grandchildren Molly, Bennett, Gavin, Leo, Anne and Oliver, and many grand-pets.

A Celebration of Glenn’s Life will be held on Monday, May 30, at noon at the Kilpatrick home in Topsfield, MA.
