The first time I learned of grandma Gertrude was from my maternal grandma Ollie Moss when I came to visit Dry Branch during Christmas break from my college in Indiana my freshman year. Ollie said she spoke to my other grandma in church and she wanted to meet me for Christmas that year... 1996. For some reason I was shocked grandma Ollie knew my other grandma since no one on my maternal side spoke of my father's side to me before . Just the rare snide remark of how much I looked like my father or behaved like "the Browns" and my mother Betty would shut the conversation down 1 second later. The 25th came and my Aunt Cimp begrudgingly took me to Gertrude's place. I buckled my seatbelt preparing for a long trip somewhere in Macon. We took a left, a right and another left... seemingly 5 minutes later we had arrived... another shock.

A tall pretty, elegant woman answered the door of the house and we began to talk for the next few hours about my life and a little about hers. The aroma of Christmas foods filled the air. She asked about places I'd lived like Italy and Germany as she liked to travel like me. She told me about her family, many older sisters, and career as a nurse in the sweetest, most innocent voice. The last surprise that day was her introducing me to my father, cousins, siblings, aunt, and uncles.

I would grow to know her better over the years until she passed. It was as if she was always in my life. As my maternal grandma passed in 1999 I was blessed to have Gertrude in my life for another twenty years. I regret I went to live in Brazil for 10 years because I could've visited more. She is truly missed and I wish we could have another convo.

My sincere condolences for such a great loss. She was Aunt Gertrude to me and I still tell my wife about trips down south to Aunt Gertrude's in the summer in the camper. Where the breakfast cooking in the kitchen woke me up in the morning and especially the summer Chad taught me how to ride a dirt bike. I've never forgotten my time spent there and it was always with so much love I will always cherish and remember it. Out of sight is not out of mind if there's anything we can do please let me know.
