Mrs. Gertrude Williams was born to the late Addie Watkins Brown (housewife) and Charlie “Shine” Brown (farmer) in Bullard, Georgia. Gertrude was preceded in death by several siblings including Emory Watkins, Elizabeth Benn, Johnny Brown, Cleveland Brown, Willie Brown, Estee Brown, Emma Lou Wallace, Mary Cornelius Hinton and Charlie Brown and their respective spouses for which she loved dearly.
Gertrude’s life was characterized by her strong faith, a joyful, friendly and giving nature which was admired by all who knew her.
Her religious upbringing was highlighted by her becoming a member of the New Bethlehem Baptist Church at an early age. She received her education from Twiggs County Public school and later pursued a licensed nursing curriculum. Gertrude was married to Silas “Buck” Williams on January 28, 1960. Their union produced four children: Adrian (Yolanda) Brown, Rogerick Williams, Cassandra (Patrick)) Solomon, and Chad Williams and her stepson Eddie Lee Williams. All of whom gave her a larger loving and devoted family.
Our memories of Gertrude will be of a person who was always concerned about others, kind, fun loving, a caregiver, and someone who had a desire to travel to gain new experiences and meet new people. Gertrude’s caregiving spirit translated into her choice of profession as a nurse. She worked at Coliseum hospital for 29 years until she retired in January 2000. When you met Gertrude, you were always awed by her larger than life personality, her positive outlook, and always being there to support others. especially those in need. She also had a great sense of history as evidenced by her travel with one of her best friends at all costs to witness the inauguration of our first black President, Barrack Obama. In her lifetime, she didn’t believe this would ever happen and she was determined to witness this historical event.
Gertrude’s memories will not only be cherished by her children but her 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Gertrude will be tremendously missed but her light will shine forever as we have all had the privilege to share this life with her.
Isaiah 40:31
31 But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
