Gerald Hal Damschroder was born in Elmore, Ohio on September 19, 1937 to Roscoe and Helen Damschroder. He was one of seven children including, Bruce, Janice, Lowell, Marilyn, Carolyn, and Dennis. In 1954 at the age of 17 he joined the United States Navy. He spent a great deal of his time while in the Navy in Antarctica. During one of his visits to Morocco he met Alice Cohen.
