Gav was a good friend of my sisters and we got chatting one day at my nieces first birthday (his god daughter) about Australia. He was going to be moving out there later on that year. I was telling him that my visa was due to come through soon but I was alittle apprehensive about actually making the move because I didn’t know anybody out there. And without hesitation and with a big smile he said ‘well, you do now….you know me…I’ll look after you’!
True to his word he welcomed me with open arms and with that same familiar smile. From that moment on he treated me like I was family. He introduced me to his incredible group of friends which led to the absolute best 9 years of my life. I will be forever grateful for the kindness and generosity he showed me and that we got to share so many laughs together along the way, as flatmates and as friends. He always blew me away with his ability to befriend an entire room of strangers in two seconds flat, leaving an indelible mark on all those who were lucky enough to meet him.
I will miss you alway Gav, sleep tight x
Sending love to Liz, Olivia, Elliott and to all his family.

Despite being too young to remember the moment captured here, I certainly remember just how many times Gav has made me laugh and smile since. Gav felt like a big brother to me, always there to offer up life advice while still letting that bright Gav Smyth charisma shine though. He was an amazing Uncle/godfather and my heart goes out to Liz, Livvy and Elliott

I clearly remember the first time I met Gav - not something one can say about most people. It was at Ricky’s house in Hall Street and the first thing that struck me about Gav was his energy, infectious enthusiasm and smile - a true zest for life and living every moment to the maximum. As I was fortunate enough to get to know Gav better - another striking feature about this amazing person was that he was always asking question and interested in YOU. The smallest things became a topic for conversation and a laugh, but he always put the other person at the centre of his bright and warm spotlight. You will be missed, Gav - and our deepest condolences To Liz, Livvy and Elliot, and Gav’s family. Rest easy mate.

It's so hard to accept when the good die young, and I can only begin to imagine the loss you will be feeling with Gav's cruel and sudden departure from this world. He was such a warm, funny and interesting guy, someone you wanted to spend time with, not to mention his larger than life and infectious laugh! They say to measure life by its breadth and not its length, which seemed to be the mantra Gav lived by. He will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him. RIP. Paul & Julia xx

I first met Gav (actually first heard his big laugh) on a very hot summer's afternoon at Opera Bar in Sydney when Gav decided to join the MBF crew for Friday afternoon drinks. I'm sure this was a ploy to get to know Liz rather than hang out with the crew. I had many a conversation with Gav, which I'm sure was about getting closer to Liz and her friends rather than the topic of work. We had many great times (pre kids) ... one that comes to mind was sitting on our balcony, overlooking Queenstown, when everyone else had gone to bed exhausted after skiing all day, and we talked till the wee hours of the morning about life, the universe and the part we can play in making it a better place. I can't believe we'll never have another conversations about how we can 'solve the problems of the world' It's been a great ride watching two people having so much fun falling in love and then becoming a family with Livvy and Elliot.
Gav, you will be forever remembered in the hearts, minds and stories of your family and friends.
