Gary's obituary
Gary Hill, 82, of Lincoln, NE passed away on September 18, 2022. He was well known and respected in the international community for his work in support of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme. Born in 1939, Gary was an internationally recognized expert in correctional matters, who produced more than 40 draft training manuals, used to help write the formal training programs for prison worker. He also worked with the Best Practices Unit of the United Nations Office of Peacekeeping Operations to produce a Lessons Learned document and a Guidance Manual for use by UN personnel and consultants who may be asked to serve in Peacekeeping Operations. He was awarded the American Correctional Association’s highest award and was recognized by the International Association of Correctional Training Personnel and the International Corrections and Prisons Association. He was appointed in numerous experts councils to advise and train at the national and international level. He also served as the Managing Director of the Nebraska State Holocaust Memorial.
Gary coordinated the non-governmental activities and ancillary meetings at the last eight UN Congresses on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (Italy - 1985, Cuba - 1990, Egypt - 1995, Austria - 2000, Thailand - 2005, Brazil - 2010, Qatar - 2015, Japan - 2021), and for all this he gained respect and gratitude from thousands of people. Everyone who had the privilege of being in contact with him will always remember his warm smile.
