Fredrick's obituary

It is with profound sadness we announce, Fredrick "Fred" Blay, Jr., passed away Sunday, November 19, 2023, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He died of natural causes, just after his 90th birthday. We know he is with the Lord, visiting with his son and daughter who passed before him.

Fredrick, always a traditionalist, preferred the use of his full name, although friends and family still used “Fred”. He was born on October 26, 1933 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan to Fredrick J. Blay Sr and Irma Lopez.  As part of “the silent generation” he learned duty, sacrifice and determination, while he navigated tumultuous times in his youth. His knowledge of sacrifice and duty led him to serve in the United States Navy. He was an active war veteran of the Korean War and was proud to serve on a U.S. Naval ship in attendance of the late Queen of England’s coronation in June 1953. His service on the U.S.S. Baltimore remains one of his most significant contributions and achievements, a testament to his duty and sacrifice for his country.

After serving in the Navy, he and his wife, Dorothy, raised their family together. He dutifully went to church with her, worked hard to provide for his family and enjoyed hunting, fishing and archery.  Early on, he spent many weekends taking his family to visit grandparents in Michigan.  As time went on, he planned more family adventures all over the United States and Canada. He traveled, often, to support his late daughter Beth, playing the flute in band. As his children grew and married, he enjoyed archery competitions with his sons-in-laws. He enjoyed music, including the Trans Siberia Orchestra, and watching anything about the outdoors on TV like Alaskan Frontier and National Geographic, he also loved puzzles.

He shared his love of the outdoors with everyone, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to talk about deer sightings and hunting with the hunters and loved big fish stories from those that fished. He held the biggest smile during the whole of those conversations - sometimes even moving him to the edge of his chair, big blue eyes wide with interest. Even more enduring, were the smiles that were boyish and mischievous. They would appear with a burst of laughter, loud and uncontrolled, when he would say something just improper enough around the grandkids (or great-grandkids) to earn a “look” from his wife and daughters. Finally, he reserved a special place in his heart for his grandchildren who, like him, served our country.

Fredrick is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Dorothy Blay, and his four cherished daughters, Lynn A. (Joe) Barker; Cheryl A (Rick) Parker; LeAnn E. (Steve) Wright; and Marcy A. (Shane) Little. In addition, Fredrick is survived by his 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He takes predeceased blessings from his late  son, Fredrick J Blay III; his late daughter, Beth Ann (Gary) Roten.; his father Fredrick J Blay Sr;  and mother Irma Lopez.

Fredrick’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him. A memorial service, in his honor, will be held on December 16, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Victory Worship 2088 Allouez Ave, Green Bay, WI, Bishop Rick A Parker officiating and all are welcome who knew and loved Fredrick.
