Francis Garcia Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, and true friend to many, passed away peacefully in Capitola, California, surrounded by the love of his family and the sound of the ocean. Known as “Fran,” he brought warmth, laughter, and kindness to everyone who crossed his path.

Born in Cottonwood, Arizona, and raised in Ontario, California, Fran adored his loving late parents, Kay and Francis “Wimpy” Garcia. Their love, wisdom, and dedication to family and tradition were Fran’s foundation and guided him throughout his life. Fran’s close relationships with his brothers, Jeff, Howard, and Gary, and his sister Ramona—along with numerous special first cousins—also shaped his life, were part of his core foundation, and supported him. One of Fran’s greatest joys was the annual fishing trip he took for decades to San Felipe, Mexico, with his father Wimpy, his brothers, and his close family members and friends.

Fran’s parents, as well as his experience growing up in Ontario, instilled in him the value of education and the opportunities it provided for him and others to realize their full potential. Fran’s intelligence, vision, passion for learning, and determination empowered him to achieve both an undergraduate degree in economics and a master’s degree in business administration from his beloved UC Berkeley. He was a proud and passionate Cal alum for life. His friends will always remember his loud and enthusiastic “roll on you bears” in celebration of big Cal football plays. Fran was also a passionate, lifelong Nebraska Football fan, influenced by his mother, who was from Nebraska, and his beloved extended family who lived there.

Fran had an incredible business acumen, deep entrepreneurial drive, and exceptional marketing skills. Armed with his Cal MBA he quickly advanced as a highly successful marketing executive, in leading companies including Frito Lay and Specialty Brands (where he ascended to company President) and Coupons.com. He also pursued his passion for empowering young people to achieve their full potential through education, career exposure, and mentorship as a Co-founder and a long-time board member of Health Career Connection (HCC). In its 35th year, HCC is a national nonprofit that has empowered over 5,800 college students from under-resourced communities to realize their full life and career potential and become health leaders. 

Later in life, Fran’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to start new ventures, driven by passion, curiosity, and creativity. He also partnered with other entrepreneurs who had promising products to strengthen their marketing and lead them to success. Beyond his professional achievements, Fran was known for his integrity and the way he always went the extra mile for others. He and his wife, Johanna, were in the process of establishing the nonprofit organization Saber Crecer to provide resources for immigrant families.

Fran epitomized a line from “He went to Paris,” one of his favorite Jimmy Buffett songs: “He was impressive, young and aggressive, saving the world on his own.” Like the subject in that song, Fran subsequently endured and persevered through some significant life and health challenges, but his passion for life, adventurous spirit, drive for success, and love of family and friends never wavered. He fully embraced the closing line: “Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way.”

The magic came from his loving wife Johanna and his wonderful daughters Valentina and Catalina. Above all, Francis was a devoted husband and father who would do anything for the people he loved. His wife and daughters were the center of his world, and he poured his heart into every moment spent with them. They were his greatest pride and joy.

Fran and Johanna built a life full of adventure, love, and laughter, celebrating their union with three weddings, including one in Colombia. They shared countless memories—traveling, opening and closing businesses, remodeling their home with care, and creating a family life rich with multicultural traditions, joy, and love.

Fran especially enjoyed traveling to Colombia, savoring the local coffee, and indulging in traditional dishes like ajiaco and bandeja paisa. He loved Colombian music and culture and took great joy in practicing his Spanish with his in-laws. Even from afar, the family celebrated every special moment of the year together.

Fran, Johanna, Valentina, and Catalina attended church every Sunday and drew strength from their faith to overcome life’s obstacles. Together, Fran and Johanna fulfilled their dreams and supported one another through every challenge, always encouraging their daughters to grow into empowered, confident women.

Fran loved sharing deep conversations with his daughters, teaching them to drive, exploring classic cars, attending car shows, and going on family rides in their cherished ’55 Buick. He was an avid reader, and two of his favorites were Desiderata and Rudyard Kipling’s If, which reflected his thoughtful, reflective nature. Music was always a part of his world—from Shakira to The Rolling Stones—and he loved dancing, cooking, and celebrating life. Fran and his family enjoyed fun times with their dog, Akira. Even in the face of challenges, he and his family faced life hand in hand, always seeing the bright side together.

Before settling with his family in San Jose, Fran lived in San Francisco for many years in a condo building he co-owned with his beloved friends David and Anita Netzer. He loved his time in The City and the pool table and stereo that his unit was organized around. His close relationship with the Netzer’s brought him joy and support for the rest of his life.

Fran was a man of quiet strength and deep faith, and compassion. He loved good conversation, music, travel, and the ocean—often finding peace in long walks by the shore. He embodied the spirit of one of his favorite songs, “My Way,” seeking out adventures, new experiences, and embracing life fully.

Part of “Fran’s Way” were his adventures around the world with close friends, including Australia, Oktoberfest, Europe, Chile, and Argentina (with Wimpy). In addition to his close bond with his siblings, Fran treasured his friendship and rituals with his "chosen brothers," including Jeff Oxendine, Fred Rosenzweig, and Tony Faulkner. They and other longtime brothers lived many treasured stories from their decades of trips to San Diego, Utah, and Chico, singing loudly, arm in arm at Jimmy Buffett and Bruce Springsteen concerts. Fran also found joy in simple things—a good meal shared with loved ones, cheering for Cal, or sharing stories that made everyone laugh.

Fran touched the lives of many people and will be remembered for his quick wit, his unwavering love, the laughter he sparked, the dreams he encouraged, and the countless ways he supported those he cared for.

Fran leaves behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, leadership, love, and humility that will live on through those who knew him best. He is deeply missed.

Francis Xavier García Jr., un esposo devoto, padre amoroso y amigo entrañable para muchos, falleció pacíficamente en Capitola, California, rodeado del amor de su familia y del sonido del mar.  Conocido cariñosamente como Fran, dejó una huella imborrable en todos los que tuvieron la suerte de conocerlo, con su calidez, su alegría y su generosidad.

Nació en Cottonwood, Arizona, y creció en Ontario, California.  Adoraba profundamente a sus padres, Kay y Francis “Wimpy” García, ya fallecidos.  Su amor, sabiduría y dedicación a la familia fueron la base sobre la que Fran construyó su vida.  La estrecha relación con sus hermanos Jeff, Howard y Gary, su hermana Ramona, y sus muchos primos hermanos fue una fuente constante de amor y fortaleza.  Una de las tradiciones que más disfrutaba era el viaje anual de pesca a San Felipe, México, al que asistió durante décadas junto a su padre, sus hermanos y familiares y amigos muy queridos.

De sus padres y de su crianza en Ontario aprendió el valor de la educación y las oportunidades que esta ofrece para alcanzar el máximo potencial.  Su inteligencia, visión, pasión por aprender y determinación le permitieron obtener el título de Economista y una Maestría en Administración de Empresas (MBA) en su querida Universidad de California, Berkeley.  Fue un orgulloso y apasionado exalumno de Cal de por vida.  Sus amigos nunca olvidarán su entusiasta grito de “¡Roll on you Bears!” para celebrar las grandes jugadas del fútbol americano de Cal.  Fran también fue un apasionado seguidor del fútbol americano de Nebraska durante toda su vida, influenciado por su madre —originaria de ese estado— y por su querida familia que vivía allí.

Fran tenía un talento natural para los negocios, un espíritu emprendedor incansable y una gran visión para el marketing.  Con su MBA de Berkeley, ascendió rápidamente como ejecutivo en importantes empresas como Frito-Lay, Specialty Brands (donde llegó a ser Presidente) y Coupons.com.  Más allá del éxito profesional, también persiguió su pasión por empoderar a jóvenes para que alcanzaran su máximo potencial a través de la educación. Fue cofundador y miembro de la junta directiva de Health Career Connection (HCC), una organización sin fines de lucro que, por más de 35 años, ha ayudado a más de 5,800 estudiantes universitarios de comunidades desfavorecidas a desarrollar todo su potencial personal y profesional, y a convertirse en líderes en el sector salud.

En años más recientes, su espíritu creativo y emprendedor lo llevó a iniciar nuevos proyectos, motivado por la curiosidad y la pasión. También colaboró con otros empresarios, ayudándolos a fortalecer sus marcas y alcanzar el éxito. Quienes lo conocieron saben que, más allá de sus logros, lo que verdaderamente distinguía a Fran era su integridad, su generosidad y la forma en que siempre se esforzaba por dar lo mejor de sí a los demás. Junto a su esposa Johanna, estaba en el proceso de crear Saber Crecer, una organización sin ánimo de lucro dedicada a brindar recursos y apoyo a familias inmigrantes.

Fran solía identificarse con una línea de una de sus canciones favoritas de Jimmy Buffett, “He Went to Paris”:

“He was impressive, young and aggressive, saving the world on his own.”

Como el protagonista de esa canción, Fran enfrentó grandes retos en su vida, pero nunca perdió su pasión, su espíritu aventurero ni su amor por la familia y los amigos. Siempre vivió con la filosofía de la última línea:

“Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way.”

(“Parte fue magia, parte tragedia, pero tuve una buena vida, de principio a fin.”)

La verdadera magia de su vida fue su familia: su amada esposa Johanna y sus adoradas hijas, Valentina y Catalina. Por encima de todo, Fran fue un esposo y padre entregado, dispuesto a hacer cualquier cosa por quienes amaba. Su esposa e hijas eran el centro de su mundo, su mayor orgullo y alegría.

Fran y Johanna construyeron una vida llena de amor, risas y aventuras.  Celebraron su unión con tres bodas —una de ellas en Colombia— y compartieron incontables recuerdos: viajando, emprendiendo juntos, remodelando su hogar con esmero y creando una vida familiar llena de tradiciones multiculturales, alegría y amor.

Fran se enamoró de Colombia: de su café, su música, sus paisajes y su gente.  Disfrutaba cada visita, saboreando platos típicos como el ajiaco y la bandeja paisa, y conversando en español con su familia colombiana, como la llamaba, a quienes quería profundamente.  Aunque a veces estuvieran lejos, la familia celebraba unida cada momento especial del año.

La fe fue siempre una fuente de fuerza en su vida.  Fran, Johanna, Valentina y Catalina asistían juntos a misa cada domingo, y de allí extraían esperanza y fortaleza para superar los desafíos.  Como familia, cumplieron sus sueños y se apoyaron en cada paso, animando siempre a sus hijas a convertirse en mujeres empoderadas, compasivas y seguras de sí mismas.

A Fran le encantaba compartir conversaciones profundas con sus hijas, enseñarles a conducir, disfrutar de los autos clásicos, asistir a exposiciones de coches y dar paseos en familia en su querido Buick del 55.  Era un lector apasionado; dos de sus textos favoritos eran Desiderata y If de Rudyard Kipling, reflejo de su alma profunda y reflexiva.

La música era su compañera constante —desde Shakira hasta The Rolling Stones—, y encontraba felicidad en bailar, cocinar y celebrar la vida.  La familia compartía muchos momentos alegres con su perrita Akira.  Aun en los tiempos difíciles, siempre enfrentaban todo de la mano, con amor y optimismo.

Antes de establecerse con su familia en San José, Fran vivió muchos años en San Francisco, en un condominio del que era copropietario junto con sus queridos amigos David y Anita Netzer.  Disfrutaba mucho de su vida en la ciudad, de la mesa de billar y del equipo de música que tenía en su apartamento.  Su estrecha relación con los Netzer le proporcionó alegría y apoyo durante el resto de su vida.

Fran fue un hombre de fe tranquila, de gran compasión y fortaleza interior.  Amaba las buenas conversaciones, la música, los viajes y el mar, donde encontraba paz caminando junto a la orilla.  Vivió plenamente, con el espíritu de una de sus canciones favoritas, “My Way”: a su manera, buscando aventuras, nuevas experiencias y abrazando la vida con plenitud.

Parte del “camino de Fran” fueron sus aventuras alrededor del mundo con amigos cercanos: Australia, el Oktoberfest, Europa, Chile y Argentina (junto a su padre Wimpy). Además de su amor por sus hermanos, Fran atesoraba a sus “hermanos elegidos”: Jeff Oxendine, Fred Rosenzweig y Tony Faulkner. Con ellos, y con otros amigos de toda la vida, acumuló incontables recuerdos durante sus décadas de viajes a San Diego, Utah y Chico, cantando a todo pulmón y abrazados en conciertos de Jimmy Buffett y Bruce Springsteen, celebrando la vida como solo los verdaderos amigos saben hacerlo.  Fran también disfrutaba de las cosas sencillas: una buena comida en compañía de sus seres queridos, animar a Cal o compartir historias que hacían reír a todos.

Fran dejó una profunda huella en quienes lo conocieron.  Será recordado por su ingenio, su amor incondicional, la alegría que contagiaba, los sueños que inspiraba y las innumerables maneras en que acompañó y apoyó a quienes amaba.

Fran deja un legado de integridad, generosidad, liderazgo, amor y humildad que seguirá vivo en su familia, sus amigos y todos los que tuvieron el privilegio de cruzarse en su camino.  Lo extrañamos profundamente, pero su espíritu permanecerá para siempre.
