Adnan's obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Dr. Fikri Adnan Akyuz, who departed this life on January 5, 2024, three days shy of his sixty-third birthday. Born on January 8, 1961, Adnan was a man of boundless energy, joy, and a ceaseless love for adventure.

He is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Tanya (Henke), whom he married in 1995, and their cherished children, son Evren and daughter Esena. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Songul Akyuz and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. Adnan was predeceased by his parents, Huseyin and Sultan Akyuz; his sister, Sati Turhan and brother, Cafer Akyuz.

Adnan earned his PhD in Atmospheric Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1994, later serving as the Missouri State Climatologist until he embarked on a notable career at NDSU in 2007, where he served both as the North Dakota State Climatologist and as a beloved professor of Climatology. One of his greatest joys in life was teaching and he loved sharing his passion for the weather with all of his students and anyone who was willing to hear more about meteorology. He also represented the US in the World Meteorological Organization and was affiliated with many organizations in his field. One of his passions was as an active member in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (COCORAHS) organization, recruiting many North Dakotans to help record daily weather data.

Outside his professional life, Fikri was a man who thrived in the great outdoors. His favorite way to spend free time was traveling, camping, rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, and frisbee golf. For Adnan, these activities were more than hobbies - they were another way to express his infectious zest for life.

He cared deeply about his family, embodying a love that was as profound as it was unwavering. His energetic, joyful, loving, and adventurous personality touched all who knew him, making him a beacon of light and happiness everywhere he went.

Fikri's loss is felt deeply, but his legacy of love, joy, and adventure will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched. His memory will be cherished forever by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In true Adnan fashion, a celebration of life around a campfire will be held this summer. More information will be available as it is planned. Memorials can be made to the NDSU Foundation (PO Box 5144, Fargo, ND 58105) for the Akyuz Family Memorial Fund for Students Under Cancer Treatment.
