Gloria and I are so sad to hear of Gene's passing. I first met Gene at a race over 20 years ago. I was always amazed that the oldest person there was the earliest to arrive, about one hour before the race timing crew did. I always said I want to be like Gene when I grow up. A few years ago I decided I wanted to learn to play an instrument and the harmonica seemed to be the least expensive way to go. I read many harmonica learning books and always needed to have the songs with the corresponding numbers on the harmonica  in place of the musical notes in front of me.  Gene was the greatest harmonica player I ever knew.  He could play any song without music as long as he knew the tune. I would play "The Halls of Montezuma for him and he would say what was that?  He would serenade me on the phone by asking what song I wanted him to play. In turn I would ask Gene for a request and without telling him play it from a video on the internet of course he knew it wasn't me.

We are going to miss you Gene. Our condolences to Gene's family.  Mark and Gloria

Uncle Gene was always kind, donated to many charities in his lifetime & always ended his phone calls with a song played on his harmonica & words "love you all".

I started running at 1980 and saw Gene running. We both like running and so made the "Pompano Beach Runners." I went to his house working a lot of runners for many years & Norma helped us. For many years helped different Races that benefited various charities. I saw Gene his sister, son Doug and daughter Donna sometimes. After Norma died, I helped Gene things. I made sure Gene will have a party Birthday Dec 1 for him. Some party Birthday were 12 peoples at my place or have a big party for him. I arranged Gene to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on Oct 19, 2019. He was Honored and got to see the Word War II Memorial and others. Then at March 7,2020 I got Gene at the BB&T Panthers Hockey Team. They honored him as a Hero! I went to other honors at him more years. When Gene did nor car and help him more. I gave my Sun Sentinel every day. When Gene was in the Health & Rehab I was every day.  When Gene to TX, Doug called me and use his phone to Gene can talk with me. It was nice to talk with him any several times.  I talked with Gene the week before he died, when Gene said he loved me Jan and I tell Gene I loved him!!
Gene was a constant joyful presence in my life as a young kid into my adulthood. His love for life, music, and infectious happiness are examples for all of us. I will miss him! Thank you, Gene!

My condolences to Gene's family. I first met Gene when [ first got into running 5K's in the 1980's.   I later became  Gene and Norma's mail carrier and close friend.  Gene was a mentor and got me involved in running and organized races.   He also invited me to assist in measuring race courses for USATF Certification.   Very rewarding.    My own Dad's birthday was also December 1st (different years) and I kind of looked at Gene like a second Father.     God Bless!
I will never forget meeting Gene at the St. Paddy's road race in Pompano Beach. I was in middle school and just starting my running career (I'd end up on the cross country and track teams all through high school). He was kind, funny, compassionate, helpful, and always in my corner. I'll miss you, Gene! RIP.
