It is hard to imagine that anyone who spent some time with Geno, didn’t come away better for it, unless perhaps you were on the other team and crossed his path on the rugby pitch, but even then there was a lesson shared, and generally one learned as well.

Geno had the heart of a warrior, with a gentle soul. He was a fierce friend, and an honest critic. There was no mistaking his voice or his laugh. He commanded respect, not because he demanded it, but because he earned it by example.

The summer that Ted Oczkowski and I spent working with Geno was the hardest I have been pushed at work, and also the work that included the most laughter, mostly at Ted or my expense. Geno always pushing the pace, but in a measured, detailed way that wasn’t about speed, but efficiency. The three of us would squeeze onto the bench seat of his pickup and head to Poulsbo where we would stay for the week- eat, work, sleep, repeat. Daily Geno would feel compelled to at some point shout at us to “Quit Fucking Around!” Even when we weren’t. If you know Geno, there was very little room for fucking around either at work, or on the rugby pitch. So we just presumed he would shout it at us out of habit, rather than necessity.

Forty years have passed since that summer, and it has been my honor and privilege to know and spend time with Geno. Mostly it has been my privilege to know him as a friend.

My deepest condolences to Katy, Anna, and Maggie.

Geno was someone that I grew up around my whole life, whether it be at our neighboring houses in Waverly, or visiting him in his Chelan cabin, later evolving to becoming neighbors there as well. He was a role model in all of the best ways, a hard worker, strong sport, and gentle giant. The things he taught me will forever stick with me and I am so thankful to have lived in the company of someone so amazing  and impactful. I will miss him dearly and I send my best to Katy Anna and Maggie  and anyone else that he was close with at this stage in his passing.

Geno, taught me how to play rugby & in doing so, while pouring from the deep well of his wizened soul also taught all of us @ Old Puget Sound Rugby Club about life.  We are all better men for having been influenced, led & mentored by him. I can't imagine the anguish of Katie, Anna & Maggie upon his passing to the Great Beyond, We should all be proud of our Geno memories & hold them & visit them when our minds still.. He was also a legend in this wild world & I witnessed one such moment  captured in Feb. '87 in Dublin where I was on my first rugby tour & met Geno had who came over to see family. Seeing Dublin through Geno's eyes was pretty much epic, but upon entering Jury's Pub after the grinding Irish forwards in prop Phil Orr's last game put England's pack to the sword. ( A true Geno type of test match) Geno & I entered the mythical Jury's where he was greeted like a long lost returning king by his countrymen & women. Standing & yelling his name, eyes lit up by their own memories w/ Geno, my chest swelled a little w/ pride at being in the company of such a great man, a true friend, a legend. February 7, 1987
Geno was always there for me and my family, when we first joined the neighborhood in sammamish him and his family took us in as an extended family, we got to experience so many things that we probably never would’ve gotten to without him and Katy and Anna and Maggie. One of my favorite memories was getting to spend the holidays with them, it was always super fun and it was always a highlight of my year as a kid. Geno always wanted the best for me and my sister and tried his best to stay in the loop with what was going on in our lives. I will miss Geno so much and I am so greatful for all that him and his amazing family has given me

May he rest in peace, we will re.ember him in our prayers. Noel and Angela

A true son of Ireland who made good in America! Inspiring, good humoured, industrious, kind hearted, knowledgeable, strong, athletic, wise and dependable, a man of the world! Gino will be sorely missed, but the memories live on!

My condolences to family and friends at this sad time.

Geno was a great mentor ,  he made you wanna come to work he made you wanna get better. If there was a problem or an issue, Geno was a type of guy that would jump right in and help you fix it. He took interest in your life, and he took interest in the little  guy on the site and wanted them to improve and excel in their career. I would say he is one of those people that I will always remember and definitely one of those people that just made you feel good. I mean at times he could be a bit rough , but it really doesn’t matter. It’s how he made you feel which is on top of the world. Let’s all strive to be a Geno!! Not gonna happen he was one of a kind

In Memory of Gino

It’s hard to say goodbye to someone like Gino.

Eugene McCarthy—but if you called him that, he’d smile and say, “It’s Gino.” He was proud of who he was—Irish through and through—and carried a quiet strength that earned respect.

He was 11 years older than me but treated me as an equal. Where others in the company looked past me, Gino stood by me. He believed in me—and that belief kept me going.

Now I’m doing his job. I don’t know as much as he did, but I feel him on my shoulder when it gets tough. His voice still guides me.

Our birthdays were just days apart—his on September 5, mine on the 2nd—and I’ll always remember that. Gino wasn’t just my boss. He was a mentor, a friend, and a good man.

Rest easy, Gino. You made a difference, and I’ll carry that with me forever.

You were a rock to me Gene, I  will miss you greatly, thank you for it all, the laughter, the words and the engineering attitude. You have taught, myself and My girls more than you know. I wont let the old woman in! xxx
A good man, great Dad, and a lovely cousin who will be sorely missed. Too many good memories to list. Maggie and Anna, treasure the time you had with him, but always remember him with a smile....I will.

Memorial Testimonial for Geno

We remember and honor a man who wasn’t just my Dad’s best friend — he was truly part of our family. For more than four decades, Geno stood beside my father through every chapter of life: the milestones, the celebrations, and even the tougher roads that life threw our way. Through it all, he remained a steady, caring, and dependable presence.

Geno had a good heart — always thoughtful, always wise. He was the voice of reason when things got complicated, and yet somehow, he still knew how to bring joy, laughter, and lightness to every room he entered. He had that rare ability to make you feel seen, heard, and supported, whether you'd known him for years or just a few minutes.

He didn't just show up for my Dad — he did so for all of us. He was kind to my husband, welcomed his family with warmth, and celebrated with us on our wedding day, in London, a moment we’ll always treasure even more now.

Geno taught us by example what loyalty, friendship, and genuine goodness looks like. He was a part of the fabric of our family, woven into some of our most cherished memories, and his legacy will live on in the stories we tell and the love he gave so freely.

We are better for having known him. And we will miss him deeply. Our thoughts, love and prayers to the McCarthy girls.

Dear Maggie, Anna and Katie Geno always seemed invincible to us. He was a friend who was there when you needed him. We will miss him. Sam, Maddy and Jay Herron

We are very saddened to hear about losing Gino ! What a great guy , along with you all  we send condolences to the family.John  and Fran casalaspro family. Rugby wise you will not be aware about a new style of seven a side rugby that Gino helped establish! It was the Richmond  annual taverners  sevens and I captained the seven which had Gino, Mike Smythe and Stuart McKinney as our three forwards. ! No problem winning possession! Then Stuart took 2plyers out, smythy took 2 out and Gino took out 2 ! Overlaps everywhere!! Sadly somehow we lost in the final( to a pub side with three welsh internationals in it !! But the beers flowed!!  I miss you Gino ! John Casalaspro

That best portion of a good man's life, his little nameless unremembered acts of kindness and of love. There are no good-byes, where ever you'll be, you'll be in my heart.
