Erik's obituary
Though we remain truly devastated by his loss, we celebrate the life of Erik Josef Audare, whose tenacity, endearing wit, and loving nature touched everyone he knew, and positively changed the lives of so many.
Erik was born February 7, 1987, to his beloved, late mother, Sharon Pagano, in Tonawanda, NY. Their bond, as a single mother and child, would be a cornerstone in his life that would undeniably shape the person he was. In his words, his mother was a “beacon of strength, pure love, and exhaustive support”, which can likewise be said about him.
A graduate of Kenmore West Senior High School, Erik went on to pursue his dream of a career on the stage, studying Theatre at Niagara County Community College. He was an immense talent- a classically trained actor and gifted vocalist, involved in more than 40 productions both on-stage and off. The works of Shakespeare were among his favourites, and friends and classmates fondly remember the incredible performance he gave as the Emcee in their production of Cabaret.
Sadly, Erik’s long-term plans were disrupted when he was diagnosed with Lupus in 2011. His struggles with multi-layered chronic illness began there, and would go on to follow him for the rest of his life. And yet, in spite of the health-related obstacles that eventually kept him from pursuing this career, music and performance would always be a part of him. His employment at Bailey Slipper Shop allowed him to help countless young dancers find their very first pairs of ballet slippers or dance shoes, and to inspire everyone around him to take joy in the arts. He had a singular, welcoming presence, and was often a source of inspiration for others.
As a passionate member of the LGBTQ+ community, Erik also dedicated much of his time to advocating for queer and trans youth, and educating others on relevant issues. He was known to mentor and offer support to people from all walks of life, via the largest international Pansexual Pride group on Facebook, as well as in the safe spaces he created for queer and neuro-diverse gamers. Many relationships he had, and people who knew and loved him, are situated all across the continent (and beyond), as a result.
In his last days, Erik was surrounded by a lot of love, between his romantic partner, and devoted friends. He had decided he was ready to adopt a new furry friend, after the loss of Muffin, Sean, and Teddy some years before that. The circumstances of his passing will always feel especially cruel, given how much he had suffered in the last few years, and how ready he was to pursue such positive changes in his life.
But above all, Erik was strong in spirit, and kept moving forward no matter what came his way. We can look to his example, and know he would be ready to encourage us, demand self care of us, and remind us that we are loved in turn.
Thank you for being you, Erik. You will be so very missed.
