Emerson and I used to be called up by our friend to volunteer as a group but when we got into our 70s our friend dropped us and thought we were too old to volunteer so Emerson had to do his own thing alone and I got left out of the Chinatown run , so I was happy I got to do it this year again but miss Emerson. - Homer, 78 year old Marine Master Sargent

Every year Emerson Chin signed us up to volunteer for YMCA. “We have to celebrate Chinese New Year and do it with the Chinatown run so people know more about our city and the family service at the Y.” He would always be there. 4:00am wake up and he’s at the Y ready to volunteer at 6am. Traffic monitor, finish line cheerleader; cheering runners on. It didn’t matter he was ready to serve.

This nature Boy Scout reminds us of Emerson Chin arrow scout. Always dedicated to making safe camping experiences for his Troop 201, his favorite talk would be camping safety and how wonderful it is to go drive a bus of youths camping and enjoy the beauty of nature and share ghost stories about Chinatown. He was so proud he liked wearing the uniform to show us.

Feb 10, 2024 was the first day of the Chinese New Year of the dragon. On that day there were five wealth gods in Chinatown passing out licee with money. I remember when it was 2022 Emerson told us about licee money given at Portsmouth Square to seniors and Michael Jeong was quick getting down and getting up to take shots of the many people chasing the wealth gods. It was so fun to see the excitement and Emerson and Michael 😊 smiling at us. It was nice to remember that time like it was this month.

January 3, 2024 We were talking about Emerson And how he would take us to Sacramento to see the big snow globe and he talks to us and Emerson would say “Ok,it’s a new year think of Who you want to help And What to do cause you not getting younger.” We finished work and this guy bangs us in the bus and says happy new year. No big deal . We look down and he has A small hand at his foot. And we laughed. Hi, Animal, Emerson Chin.. Thanks for Always being around us. Hang loose!

Winterblast 2023 They were there in spirit. Emerson Chin, Michael Jeong and Bill Jeong would go enjoy a Christmas meal at pork chop house in Chinatown. The favorites were prime ribeye steak, stew beef, corn beef, cow tongue and spare ribs. Many Grads from Francisco , Marina Middle School and Galileo high school would Come early to nab a seat and chit chat about the times they were bullied by Rock throwing at the Stockton tunnel or at Fisherman Wharf, but ask them if they would trade their childhood, they would not miss it for the world cause they found life long friends like Leland Wong and Ron.
We all want to be kids going …
We all want to be kids going on a field trip not a homeless teenager on the left laying on the field and tripping up in life. After a veteran meeting, I remember Emerson stopping me as he walked me to the muni bus stop. “Do you have a clothes item you can give up? Do you have some food? Where is my wallet? Hey, hi my name is Animal Emerson Chin. I see you are a teenager on the streets. We can get as cold as 40 degrees with fog it can get freezing. Can I offer you a meal and a bus ride some where to get home? What, you have no place to go? I am a veteran and a security guard. I am a Boy Scout. I go to SF Bible Church and Holy Redeemer Church. I am a good person. I am a skateboarder and I love Tony Hawk. Do you know young people like you should be enjoying life not out here sad and alone. Come on if you trust me I can give you a place to shower and stay and then I take you to places for help, I work with homeless connect and I can get you case working with Red Cross if you had a fire and lost your home… Three days on the streets it can be dangerous… please let me help you. I was poor and I was abandoned by my family. I was homeless too but friends helped me and I came back, I accepted help. I am animal chin, a survivor and I remember those who were kind to me and now I live to give back.” That day when I heard those words, tears welled in my eyes as I smiled at him, they stamped an impression in my heart that Emerson Animal Chin You are so good. But when you ill and dying, who helped you Emerson and offered you comfort and a hand—- that person would be Emerson’s friend. I guess it was no one but god.

Emerson would find time around the early part of December to volunteer at Salvation Army with the Asian fire fighters. Tonight the Asian fire fighters were giving away toys at Salvation Army. Emerson would walk each child to a station and they would pick a toy and a stuffed animal and then walk out to their parents. Funny thing is when he had gout pain you’d think he’d slow down but he kept volunteering to see kids happy cause he remembered growing up poor he and his sister had no toys 🧸 but he was not going to let other poor kids suffer.

We always ate leftovers after thanksgiving and each person brought something to the table, at one meal Emerson said this to Bill Jeong who was teaching him to pray a blessing over the food. Dear god Thanks to the hands that put this together. Thank you for the blessings. Thank you for everyday because thank you is not enough just for today . I thank you god thru my actions everyday to help somebody get off the street , find food ,medicine and a job, find a new family that love them. Bless this food to my body Amen. —-Emerson Chin

1994, San Francisco Greyhound Station

Back in ‘94 I was a troubled teen…lost in my way and on the streets of Frisco. I was at the Greyhound Bus Station waiting for my bus ride to Ohio, which was set to depart in 5 or so days. Needless to say, a bench in the terminal would be my “bed” and the terminal my “home” for that time.

As I sat there watching life and thinking about what I was going to do for the next 5 days…An “Angel” appeared in the escalator and began to approach me. (Being 15 yrs old and on the streets at the time, I was very skeptical and cautious of people.) This “angel” was Emerson. A little Asian man with a smile as big as could be and a heart he visibly carried on his sleeve. Emerson offered me a place to stay and fed me for the next few days. I rode on his bus during his shift to get to know him; he insisted I do this first to feel comfortable and if I wasn’t, he would take me back to the station. By the end of the ride I had a new friend. Emerson told me all the various jobs and things he did. At first I though he was “full of it”…until I was sitting in Giants Stadium. He said he was a skateboarder…then he shown me his skateboard collection. Took me to Chinatown to eat…to this day is was the best Chinese I’ve eaten. Duck Lo Mein, in a little restaurant with a few booths.

Although my time with Emerson was short, I never forgot him. Very few people have made an everlasting impression on me in my life…he did. I only wish life would have let us cross paths again. I blame myself. I have thought about him frequently over the years and always wanted to thank him for what he did for me. I can honestly say, he shown me what a good person really is.

Emerson, I’m so sorry I never reached out and when I felt it was time for me to do so; you left this world and continued on to the next. You made an impression on me that will last the rest of my life. Rest easy friend…I love you “Animal”! Always have, always will.

Veterans Day Emerson would call us up and we would go with Bill Jeong and eat at his favorite places. He would go get a Starbucks coffee and add milk and forget he’s lactose intolerant. He would go to IHOP for a red white and blue pancake. Then off to Applebee’s for a free entree with a dessert and walk it off til he got hungry for dinner at Sizzler or BJ. And then a tiny pizza from California Pizza Kitchen. It was fun watching him line it just right so he had a little something from each place. It was like treating himself and he managed to get chocolates free from Sees too. He would say”it’s nice they recognize the sacrifice, the service, and continued service of veterans- I still volunteer” but I like to visit and chat with them and it is a fun day to connect with young people. Happy Veterans Day!

Emerson always went to veterans parade. Fist bumping Skip at the judging stage and he’d always buy something at the Alioto crab marketplace. He would walk and pass out red poppies so people remember resiliency. Like the red poppies that filled the spaces between headstones where there was bloodshed. Emerson would tell homeless veterans “when you hit rock bottom always get back up slowly”— Emerson Chin And like the flowers that rose from the Flanders fields we rise today and we honor and never forget our veterans.

Emerson always took us to Castro after trick or treating with us. We used to go to Menorah Park to teach seniors to be safe And Emerson and Bill Jeong would teach seniors fire safety and earthquake duck cover and hold on.

Emerson and my NEMS co -workers know me as Fei jai or chubby. I have known Emerson for the 15 years worked here. Lunch time with Emerson was mostly at Yummys on Pacific. We ate the best meat balls, Emerson likes them steamed fresh. I miss most his giving kind self and how he dedicated himself to Homeless Connect and how he went to conventions to speak for them and to reconnect homeless back to resources and to the community. He was a good friend. He wanted to move near me to be my neighbor but it never happened. —Kin Tsang, Security at North East Medical Services in North Beach

Emerson’s favorite words with his team: At the health fair as he helped Heart Association and SF NERT educate seniors to be safe. “Okay, take it serious, what are the signs of a stroke? You can save yourself and family. It is face dragging, arm numbness or shaking like this.. Speech blah blah blah not clear time to call 911 help and don’t hang up tell them cross street wait till they come!!” He had his simple way and it was ingenious and he would laugh and be at fair from 9am till 3:30pm, and it worked cause he was genuinely trying to save one person cause he cared.

Emerson was a kind and generous man. We miss him at the Chinatown Community Health Fair. He worked with the Lions club to help seniors with vision checks at the health fair, he worked the pantries and he was a troop 201 scout master and supporter. He also was dedicated to Alameda Wa Sung and helped at the Easter pancake day fundraisers. -Gilbert Gin, veteran friend
I remember Emerson telling us…
I remember Emerson telling us to go to Uncle Vito’s Pizzeria at Bush and Powell street to meet his celebrity friends. It felt like yesterday. Emerson told us the twins always sit by the window to eat and sip wine. And that year he walked us up Powell and we got up the hill panting and we waved to them and they smiled back at us. Wow, Emerson knows famous people!
