Emerson served as a Radioman in the United States Coast Guard serving at USCG Rockaway and USCG Firebush. Following his service he had a long career beginning at Western Electric and then Bell South / AT&T rising to regional manager over Kentucky and Tennessee. He retired in 1997. He was a member of the Kentucky Colonels , the AT &T Pioneers, and the Kentucky Humane Society. He was a devoted pet owner throughout his life.
Emerson was a prolific storyteller and loved to recount his life experiences ( in amazing detail ).
