2014, Manhattan, New York, NY, USA
I surprised Beth with a trip to NYC over Labor Day Weekend. The biggest part of the surprise was front table seats to Cabaret. Beth was a huge Alan Cumming fan and he was doing a run of the show for a few months, so I was planning the surprise for the better part of a year. At one point in the show, he was standing right next to Beth and our table when he was singing off stage. She was so excited, definitely one of my favorite memories of her. After the show I said we should wait at the backstage door, and sure enough he comes out and signs her program. They didn't allow pictures, but we snuck in a blurry one.
Beth was an expert at winning prizes from radio stations, she would listen to morning radio and always call in when she wanted to win Renaissance Festival tickets or whatever. One time she won a trip to New York City when she was a teenager, but since she was underage she needed an adult to give permission but her parents wouldn't let her go (imagine not letting a 16 year old go with her friend to NYC alone...go figure!). Beth said she didn't talk to her mom for a year for that one. Yes, she was stubborn and could hold a grudge like nobody's business.

She was always calling in and winning KFMA tickets or CDs or whatever, the people at the radio station had a list of prizewinners and they would have to wait until 30 or however many days later to participate again, and Beth kept track of it so she could win more stuff.

Another time she won front row seats to the Rolling Stones. She asked me if she could take her Aunt Chris instead of me because she was such a huge fan, which I was totally cool with - I liked them but was not a superfan or anything. Anyway they go to the Rolling Stones and they had backstage passes to a meet and greet and there was free wine and beer. Beth was not one to turn down free booze...anyway long story short, they get kicked out of the concert during the encore. KICKED OUT OF FRONT ROW SEATS...LOL. Beth was so worried that Chris wouldn't forgive her, but then she said that Chris thought it was the greatest thing ever to get kicked out of a Stones concert.

I remember my sister taking me to all the summer movies when we were kids. That’s the kind of sister she was. We would stop off at Michael’s (the arts and crafts store) because they had a little candy section and would load up for the movie. Beth would usually sneak it in for us in her purse, which probably was as rebellious as my sister got back then. What made these moments even better was we would always walk to the theater, which gave us lots of time to talk. We had some of the best conversations. We would laugh about things all the way to our destination, My sister did lots of things like this for me. Beth defined what a big sister was suppose to be and then some. I looked up to her and could always rely on her for anything. I feel grateful to have had such a close relationship and have so many amazing memories of my sister. I look forward to sharing more soon ❤️

Our elementary school holds annual father/daughter and mother/son dances, and Rhys and Beth would always go to them. In 2016, the PTO organized a "Star Wars" themed party. The night is usually about teaching the boys about how to be a gentleman with their moms - doing things like holding the door open and getting her a drink, and asking to dance in a proper way. This year someone had the idea of giving the kids light sabers - basically fluorescent colored styrofoam pool noodles. For the record, I believe the school staff recommended against the idea, but it was in the PTO's hands. You can imagine what the result of this Mother/Son dance was...or even better watch this video!

Beth was annoyed and left early, but I find it to be one of the most hilarious videos ever and an enduring memory of Ironwood. In the end, they collected all the light sabers and gave them back at the end of the night.

My relationship with Beth began the year I was born.  She entered my life in 1990 as my babysitter.  My parents were separated and I didn’t have very much family apart from that, so Beth filled that void for me.  I didn’t realize at the time, being a little boy.  I just knew she was the coolest person I’d ever met.  I remember the back of her car was completely covered with bumper stickers.  That was fascinating to me.  When I got my first car after college, I covered the back of it with bumper stickers.  Not as many.  I couldn’t compete with her bumper sticker badassery.

Beth wasn’t the type of baby sitter to tell on you for not eating your asparagus.  She was the type who drew Disney characters with you and took you to see Star Wars.  She went to all of my birthday parties and to my graduations.  She went to my sister’s birthday parties and her graduations also.  She didn’t have to, you know?  I would’ve still loved her if she hadn’t.  But Beth was so supportive and loving and accepting.  She was my role model before I knew what that meant.  She was my neutral parent who was sweet and kind to my mother and kind and tolerant of my dad’s crude jokes.

Speaking of jokes, Beth’s laugh is my favorite laugh.  It’s this sort of snicker/snorty kind of laugh and it’s contagious and genuine.  I can hear it in my head if I think about it.  Beth always sent me Christmas cards and birthday cards and they’d all have her signature smiley face with eye lashes drawn on them.

Every so often my mom would have a quick errand to run and Beth and Jim would have me and my sister over to hang out until my mom picked us up.  That’s when Jim introduced me to the game Turok, this dinosaur hunter game.  This must have been around 2002 or 2003ish.  I probably only played Mario Kart up until that point so once again, Beth introduced me to something cool, Jim, who introduced me to something cool, Turok.  Somehow that always stuck with me.  But that’s how all of my memories with Beth are; they’re vivid, happy, bright, adventurous.

In 2007 I got to be at Beth and Jim’s wedding.  My mom and I were there.  My sister would’ve been there too, but she was out of the country for school that year.  I remember being so proud to be invited to her wedding.  I remember how happy and honored i felt when she came over to our table to say thank you for coming.  I remember at one point, we all lined up to get a chance to dance with Beth.  I was nervous.  I always had a crush on Beth.  I had been taking ballroom dance classes earlier that year and I felt like this was my moment to show them off.  My mom gave me some money to tuck into Beth’s dress and I proceeded to try and teach her to foxtrot, without success (nervous teacher), while many eager admirers of Beth waited behind me for their turn.

Everybody who went to that wedding got a purple/blue shot glass with the date and Jim and Beth’s names on it.  There’s a crescent moon and stars on it as well, I believe.  I still have that shot glass.  I sent Beth a photo of it very recently.  Earlier this year when I was going through some things.  She was surprised and flattered that I still had it.  It’s much more than a shot glass to me, of course.

Since the wedding we’ve always kept in touch, though me moving out of Arizona made our in-person meetings less common.  It was never difficult to catch up if it had been some months though, and I always got to see her loving personality and hear her laugh in the videos she posted on Facebook.

I’ve included some photos i have with her when i was a kid.  I couldn’t find all of the photo albums in the garage but I will keep looking, as I have more photos with her as I got older, too.

I loved Beth.  I still do.  I am heartbroken.  She truly was family, and an angel for being so willing to play that role.  Anybody would be lucky to have known Beth.

~Bo
