I had the privilege of knowing Elbert over the last few years of his life as his physician. I knew him to be a man of quiet humor, which more often than not he directed at himself, of honesty, and humility. He was never one to call attention to himself except perhaps in a self-deprecating way. But it was also clear he was a man with great pride: pride in putting in a full and honest day’s work, pride in being more generous to others than to himself, and pride in his own health struggles. He was not one to whimper or complain. The standard he held for himself was the highest, though.

He was a little older than me, but we grew up in the same tumultuous Vietnam war time that defined our generation. As a medical student my fate was quite different, but I remember, and I am aware of the deep sacrifice these men made and how difficult their return into our ranks it could be. So it was with Elbert. He had his pleasures, though. I heard about his record albums and we talked vinyl sometimes. But I heard most about his family and what all of you meant to him.

To measure his generosity, one need only look at the causes he would like us to think about supporting: refugee support, animal rescues, veterans’ support, the environment, and others. He was a good man with a big heart. I join all of you in honoring his memory.
