I met Effie many years ago, when our kids were friends at SEEC. She was a magnetic person, a Smithsonian role model, and a devoted mom. Andrew and Melina, you are in our hearts and we are so sorry for your loss.

I will remember Effie as a loving and kind colleague and ELDP classmate. Her leadership in increasing developing the digital strategy for the American Women’s History Initiative was inspiring. My heart goes out to you and your family. Sending prayers and conform during this difficult time.

I worked with Effie in Philadelphia, and she was smart, funny, and all-around lovely. My deepest condolences to her family and everyone who loved her.
I knew Effie while at Cognitive Arts/Learning Sciences. I will always remember Effie as a bright light. Her aura was full of sparkles. And she had a beautifully goofy sense of humor that made her all the more charming. It was a joy to know her. Wishing her and her family peace.

I’m so sorry to hear about Effie. She was a wonderful colleague, and she always wore the most wonderful glasses. To her family, I send my heartfelt condolences. My hope is that her memory will be a blessing.

I was initially annoyed that Minh took this unflattering photo. But now I’m so grateful to have a picture of my last hug from Effie. Maybe you can look at it and feel her hugging you, too.

You inspired me, sometimes puzzled me, but always believed in me. I miss you.

Effie and her enchanted unicorn of the sea
The tiny yoga class a couple of people have mentioned was first held in the offices of the Smithsonian Photography Initiative on the 7th floor of Capitol Gallery, in an L-shaped hallway. We laid out our mats in single file, with Effie at the star point, filling this otherwise awkward space with peace, acceptance, inspiration, and an ongoing invitation to stretch ourselves beyond what we thought possible. I’m left with the image of Effie bringing this beauty and radiance to all of her endeavors, and am heartbroken at her loss. My deepest condolences to Andrew, Melina, and family, and her dear friends and colleagues.

What a gift Effie was to us all. I feel so lucky that I had a front row seat, for a time, to the vibrancy, passion, and fearlessness she brought to everything she did. The Smithsonian is so much less cool without her here. In an organization that talks a good game about inspiration and treasures, she was both. She made me want to be a better museum person and a better feminist, and don't even get me started on the fashion. Wishing only peace for her and her family, and this very large community of people that loved her.
