Dear Ellen, Leanne, David, Dan and Jeremy:
Please accept my deepest condolences upon the passing of your wonderful husband and father. Ed was one of our favorite farm neighbors, always curious, energetic and upbeat, with that ginormous smile ever on display. I always liked him, but he secured my undying gratitude when I was 14 and my sister, Anne, was 16, and he made it possible for us to afford our first pair of coveted Frye boots--which cost a whopping $50, waaay more than my father would ever have spent on footwear for us--by offering us a generous discount at his shoe store, thereby allowing us to purchase them for ourselves (take THAT, Dad!) with our meagre paychecks from our summer job detassling corn. It might sound like a small thing, but believe me, at 14, that was a big deal.
I admired his adventuresome spirit and the way he fully embraced life, and was particularly struck by the way he took to horses and horseback riding as an adult, not only in Galena but on some super challenging backcountry trips. Even when I was a kid, he treated me with respect, asking questions about my life, and he was always ready to lend a hand if my parents--and after my Dad died, just my mom--needed help. He was a beloved member of our Galena community-I never heard anyone say a disparaging word about him--and although I have not seen him in years, since I rarely got back to the farm as an adult, and we have since sold our property there, I think of him often and very fondly. Whenever I did see him, he was delighted to catch me up on news about all of you "kids," particularly David and Leanne, since you were the ones Anne and I played with when we were younger. I need not tell you how proud he was of all of you.
I know his last years were not easy, given his stroke, and I hope his good nature allowed him to savor his life and his time with all of you regardless.
In sympathy for your loss, Kathy
