Ed's obituary
Edward Martin Rummel, age 83, of Chocowinity NC, passed away peacefully on March 23rd, 2025 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro NC. He was born on August 23rd, 1941 in Arcadia, PA.
Ed has a stroke in May of 2023 and, due to him being a Navy Veteran, he was a resident of the NC State Veteran’s Facility in Kinston, NC from September of 2023 until his death.
Ed was one of 7 children from Sylvester and Ethel Thompson Rummel (Houston). He grew up in Indiana PA. Ed joined the Navy in 1959 and served on the USS Remey as a Petty Officer 2nd class (boiler technician) until 1963. After the Navy, Ed became an industrial water treatment salesman, first working with Zimmite Corporation, out of Cleveland, OH and then later working for ASI, INC., also out of Cleveland OH, until he retired in 2016.
Ed married Mary E. Erwin in May of 1970. They moved with their two daughters to Pittsburgh, PA. In 1982, the family moved to Orlando FL. Ed and Mary became very involved at University Carillon Church for over 35 years. Ed and Mary moved to Chocowinity, NC in 2020 to leave the hurricanes behind and be close to their daughter and her husband.
Ed is survived by his wife Mary Rummel, their two daughters, Terri L. Smith (Kevin) and Kimberly D. Roberts (Greg), three grandchildren, Lindsay Smith-Neutzling (Will), Colin Smith, and Nolan Roberts, great-granddaughter Paige Neutzling, sister Louis Bowman (children Sandy, Rhonda, Brian), Geraldine Gamble (Bud) (children – Yvonne, Mark, Edwin, Yvette, Regina, Vince), Katie Markovich (children Debbie and Bobby), and Beverly Butterworth (children Tina, Trisha, Bradley), Nephews Ronny, Michael, Johnny, Michael, and niece Penny, sister-in-laws Cevin Galvis (Charles, Hanna, Haley) and Karol Rummel. He was predeceased by his parents, Sylvester and Ethel Rummel (Houston), brother Ron Rummel, sister Cheryl Hoffman, brother-in-laws Jr. Bowman and Ken Butterworth, and nieces Barbara, Violet, and Marty.
Ed was a dedicated family man, “water doctor”, warrior for God, whom was always involved with many aspects of his church and church family and planted seeds everywhere he went. Ed was such and encourager to everyone he met. Even at the VA Facility, Ed would roll his wheelchair into the PT room and tell other residents “you’re doing a great job, keep it up” and he would tell every person “have a great day in the Lord”. All the people Ed was involved with at his church, can tell story after story of Ed’s love, grace, and support. Everyone will remember Ed’s laughter, love, and how he was the face of Jesus to everyone he met.
Ed’s final resting place will be at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Bushnell Florida. A memorial service will be held at University Carillon Church – 1395 Campus View Ct, Oviedo, FL 32765, sometime in the future, and a memorial service will be held at First Methodist Church Washington – 304 W 2nd St. Washington, NC 27889 on Saturday April 5th 2025 at 2PM in the main Sanctuary. Refreshments will be served after the service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Joe MacClaren Scholarship Fund at University Carillon Church or the Barnabus Fund at the Washington Church in Ed’s name.
