Eddiesteen's obituary

Eddiesteen Davis was born on August 7, 1939, to Elizabeth Cross and Oscar Davis in Philadelphia, PA. Her fearless mother raised her with the foundation and principle to “live long and live strong”.

Eddiesteen or Steenie as she was affectionately called, was the second eldest of ten siblings and grew up with a Pentecostal commandment-keeping background. From the age of 3 years old, she was gifted with the ability to play the piano and was known to be the prayer warrior amongst her siblings. In addition to her musical gift, she also had a passion for education. She swiftly moved through the School District of Philadelphia and graduated from William Penn High School.

Eddiesteen always had a penchant for fashion and design. She worked as a seamstress for a Philadelphia manufacturing company and helped to create jobs for other women from her church. Additionally, Eddiesteen would make outfits for herself, her children, and members of the temple.

Over time, Eddiesteen grew to be an initiator and great collaborator. She was one of the founding members of Congregation Temple Bethel where she took on the role as a musician extraordinaire and would play for services for as long as they lasted. With a can-do attitude, she was willing to help wherever she could to build the house of Hashem (God) and assumed the position of chief scribe for the congregation. While serving as a member, she later met and married the love of her life, James Buster Burno, and mothered seven children from this union. As a family, they were faithful members under the leadership of the late Mother Louise E. Dailey. Bethel was affiliated with the House of God Inc. under the leadership of the late Bishop Simon P. Rawlings, Chief Apostle.

After serving at Bethel, Saint Eddiesteen helped to co-found her very own church which led to the development of Temple Shalom House of Yahweh under the auspices of the House of God Inc. Through her style and grace, she chose to embody the teachings of her maternal ancestry and firmly believed in establishing coalitions for women to uplift and support one another. In her pursuit to expand this purpose, she later founded and served as head prelate and Matriarch of Israel Ministries where she continued for 12 years until returning home to Temple Shalom.

Because of her passion for music and youth, she established the Temple Shalom H.O.Y Summer Camp, which provided a safe haven for kids to continue to learn and have fun while school was out. Her efforts were amplified through her leadership over the House of God’s Young People’s Union (Y.P.U.). During her thirteen-year tenure as the National Y.P.U. President, she organized many conventions and events, traveled across the United States and to other countries, and greatly influenced the music ministry. Upon passing the torch of Y.P.U. president, she continued to impact the lives of many and served as an ambassador of goodwill, spreading love and support amongst the children of Israel.

In later years, Matriarch Eddiesteen went on to pursue and earn her Bachelor of Business Administration at Strayer University in September 2015. After graduating, she enrolled in a Master's program for legal studies and continued to take many classes to stay mentally dexterous. In addition to her educational pursuits, she was an engaged community leader establishing the Temple Shalom H.O.Y Food Cupboard over 35 years ago and it continues today. She has also served as a member of the NAACP, The Black Clergy, Avenging the Ancestors Coalition (ATAC), and Women in Partnership with God to name a few.

We will miss her greatly. Eddiesteen Burno was predeceased by her parents: Elizabeth Cross and Oscar Davis; siblings: Norma Louise Carson, Sylvia Butler (Leonard), Juanita Douglas, and Robert Douglas; late husband: James Burno; children: Juanita Hearne and Miriam Vanessa Reed.

She is survived by her siblings: Maxine Roberts, Lorraine Nixon, Norman (Gwendolyn) Douglas Jr., Hadassah Johnson, and Joseph Ezra (Remel) Douglas; children: James Oscar Burno Sr., Cheryl Oumi Morrison, David (Maalika) Burno Sr., Josephine Sabree, and Steven Burno; children in love: Dana Hearne, Steve Reed, Karen Burno Wallace, Julia Rodriguez, Steve Morrison, Sr., Sherry Burno, and Shahid Sabree; god-children: Naomi Kirklin and Debra Nesmith; 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted family, and friends.
