I am saddened to learn of Jerry’s passing. A passionate and generous soul, he made a significant impact in my life. I served with Jerry on the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. In 2004, my art installation, “Luggage From Home To Camp,” opened at the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj). Jerry was my bakushen. He had introduced me to Jimi Yamachi, Ken Iwagaki and other shakers/movers at JAMsj so that I eventually collaborated with the vibrant JAMsj community to tell the extraordinary interment camp stories of ordinary Japanese Americans who were detained by the government of the United States during World War II. The show honored several JA elders who opened their hearts to share their actual internment camp suit cases, a symbol of their pain and resilience.

Jerry always had a smile for me. I now return his kindness to Lucia and to his family. May his legacy embrace and invigorate the community that he dearly loved and served as a mentor. He taught us that from oppression goodness grows. Jerry was a Social Justice Warrior. I will miss him. Dearly.

Contemporary Asian Theater Scene (CATS) is profoundly saddened by the passing of our beloved leader and co-founder, Dr. Jerry Hiura.  Jerry co-founded CATS in 1995 with the mission to provide a platform and voice for emerging Asian American artists. As a result of Jerry's tireless dedication and leadership, the mission of CATS was fulfilled in the form of countless performances by an array of Asian artists and performance groups.  Under Jerry's inspirational guidance, CATS has showcased promising Asian American filmmakers, authors, playwrights, comedians, acting ensembles, and musicians.  Going forward, CATS is committed to carrying out Jerry's dream in honor of his lifetime of work and legacy.  Jerry will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

We started out on opposites sides of what art diversity and politics meant for San Jose over 30 years ago. Over the years, mutual respect and friendship resulted. His unwavering respect, encouragement and support have played an important part in my life.

Over the years, he often had one-sided discussions with me while he worked on my dental needs. His smile let me know he so enjoyed my responses when I could finally open my mouth to respond back.

Dr. Jerry, your shining light in my life will be missed, my friend.
My deepest condolences to the family.

I cannot even begin to express how much Jerry brought light and love to all those around him. A fellow lover of the arts, a 23 year long lunch companion and a dear and gentle friend. My deepest condolences to Lucia and all his family.
