i dig Doug.
I believe in love.
I believe in acts of service.
I believe in acts of general kindness…
I believe that love is and does all the above.
Sometimes we all find ourselves
in a group that is above our pay grade.
And only love will bridge such gaps.
And lets just set aside the fact that wars are fought
to maintain such delineation amongst mere mortals…
and focus on how love is greater than war.
Or famine. Or injustice.
Or lack of water...
Or any old thing that would rise up against us.
Against our human race.
Cheating us against one another…
“May I get you a refill?”
It was nothing new.
I’d come to expect it.
I bet all of us had.
Of all the powerful men at the table,
he would most usually be the one to refill my drink.
This time, ineffably, it was water.
I was on a diet thing that didn’t allow other liquids.
And that cool glass of water appeared.
As did Doug’s smile. And attention.
Never tepid. Just pleasant.
Because if he wasn’t refilling our cups, he was asking how we are doing.
All whilst intentionally pulling a stool nearer to listen to the freakin’ answer!
Peppering his focus with further questions, inserting details from past conversation.
You feel like The President…
…of the table anyway.
Meanwhile, your cup just stays full.
I dig you, Doug…always did.
And I miss you…
And will never stop filling other people’s cup.
Can’t wait to be President of some ‘lil cafe in Paradise.
I bet those cups are amazing...as is Doug...
and that smile.
save a place for me!
