Doreen's obituary

Doreen Lynn Clowes (née Jensen), 67, of Boulder, died peacefully in her son’s home with her family by her side on January 4, 2022, after a prolonged battle with cancer. Born in Laurium, Upper Michigan to Floyd and Rosalie Jensen on January 26, 1954, and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, she spent most of her life in Colorado.

She was an artist who brought beauty and transformation wherever she went, through the dedicated work of her hands. She created flourishing gardens in the midst of arid landscapes, turned old, run-down residences into beautiful, timeless spaces, and painted exceptional works with outstanding depth and texture. She always left beauty in her wake.

Doreen had a great love of nature, which she loved to share with others. She walked daily and hiked as much as possible. She battled a chronic migraine condition throughout her life, yet was never deterred from getting outside. She especially loved to explore the trails in Rocky Mountain National Park and she never outgrew her wonder for beautiful places.

She enjoyed the outdoors and nearly any activity with her husband Patrick, of 44 years. They completed many projects together, helped build several churches and ministries, and had many adventures. She had an easy, delightful laugh that no one could surface quite like he.

Doreen loved spending time with her children and shared a deep love with each of them. She adored her grandchildren.

Doreen described a personal encounter with Jesus in her early twenties and held fast to her faith throughout her life. She enjoyed singing worship songs, reading scripture and attending her weekly women’s study. She had a strong hope in redemption of both body and soul and a conviction that God is making all things new.

She loved water and a portion of her heart always remained in Lake Superior, where she enjoyed annual trips with her mom and sisters, soaking in the fresh air, talking and dancing late into the night.

Those who knew her could count on her for her listening ear, her honesty, her kindness and her steadfastness. She brought strength and bravery to life’s difficulties, and truly embodied what the Finnish call sisu, “an almost magical quality, a combination of stamina, perseverance, courage and determination held in reserve for hard times.”

She is survived and dearly missed by her loving husband, Patrick Clowes, daughter Hannah (Andres) Garcia, daughter Alison Clowes, and son Peter (Kerilyn) Clowes, her grandchildren Mateo, Luca, Rowan, Elian and Addison, her mother Rosalie Foley, her sisters, Kandy Bloom and Darleen Ramsfield, and her brother Steven Jensen.

A Memorial service will be held on Friday January 14 at 2pm at Cornerstone Church at 1190 S Lashley Ln in Boulder, CO.
