Don's obituary
Donald Eugene Koon
June 20, 1938 – April 2, 2025
Donald Eugene Koon, 86, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Those who knew him attest that he lived a life marked by devotion, integrity, and hard work.
Donald was born to Kelvin (K.C.) and Leotta Prescott Koon on June 20, 1938, in rural Beaumont, California. He was raised in a lively and industrious household alongside his five siblings—Sonny, Bob, Dick, Virginia, and Kenny. From an early age, Donald was shaped by the values modeled in his home: faith, resourcefulness, and a strong work ethic. Much of his own character—his sense of responsibility, creativity, and quiet strength—can be traced back to the examples set by his parents and siblings.
On June 28, 1958, Donald married the love of his life, Jill. Together, they built a legacy of love and commitment over nearly 55 years of marriage before Jill’s passing on April 22, 2013. Even after her death, their bond and shared commitment to family remained a cornerstone of Donald’s life until his final days.
Donald and Jill raised nine children: Steven, Roger, Anthony, Randall, Kimberlie, Kasey, Kellie, Shelly, and Shawna. He was a dedicated father and grandfather whose love and presence shaped generations.
Donald spent most of his vocational life as a mechanic, a career that reflected both his talent for fixing things and his tireless work ethic. Over the years, his work and growing family took him throughout California, from Calipatria and Bellflower to Arroyo Grande and eventually Palm Springs. In 2008, Donald and Jill moved to Peoria, Arizona, where he lived out his later years.
Donald’s faith in God was a quiet but steady presence throughout his life. It was first nurtured by his mother and deepened through his involvement in the Methodist Church in Brawley during his younger years. In his later life, after moving to the Palm Springs area, he found renewed fellowship and spiritual growth through his involvement at Southwest Church, where he grew in his appreciation for God's goodness and grace.
Known for his steady strength, Donald was a man of principle and loyalty. He was deeply devoted to his family, a loving husband, a faithful provider, and a model of perseverance. His legacy lives on in the many lives he shaped, not only through his hard work and wisdom, but through his steadfast love and devotion. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services to honor and celebrate Donald’s life will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley, CA on Friday, June 27, 2025.
