Dennis's obituary

Dennis Leahy, 74, Rockford, passed away July 8, 2025, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, Peoria, IL. Born November 9, 1950, Fort Bragg, NC, the son of Earl and Feryl Leahy, he earned his BS and MS from Northern Illinois University and JD from Ohio Northern University. Dennis married Susan Witte, December 19, 1982, in Rockford.

Beginning as a Rockford City Attorney in 1976, later he entered private practice joining his mentor, Attorney Sam Cannariato, for several years. He then opened his own law firm and was semi-retired after practicing law as a sole practitioner for 49 years.

Dennis had an entrepreneurial spirit. In 2007, he established Morning Star Village, a senior living community in Rockford providing comfortable living and quality care for many residents over the years.

Outside of work, Dennis read extensively, explored local natural areas, and journeyed to Northern Wisconsin and the United Kingdom. Unique family travel ranged widely from Beijing to Buenos Aires to Reykjavík. Other favorite travel destinations included Palm Springs, CA, and Boca Grande, FL, where he spent many Christmas holidays and spring breaks with his family.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan Leahy, Rockford; daughter Regan Leahy (Fearghas MacGregor), London, UK; sister Jean Leahy, Psy.D., Chicago; and numerous cousins. Predeceased by parents and sister, Linda Leahy. He will be greatly missed.

Cremation Rites have been accorded. Further information regarding a celebration of life and memorials in Dennis’ name will be forthcoming via this website. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Family House of Peoria, IL. More details on this can be found on the main memorial page.
