Dear Mala and extended family,
You all, including Dean, have been a big part of our lives for 60 plus years. Please see our "memories" of Dean during that time. We miss Dean but cherish that we got to know and love him. We love you all and share hugs, memories, sadness and joy.
Love, Lanie and John (Dickel)

Dean was an older cousin to me by 7 years. My parents and my siblings spent a lot of time with Dean David, and Dale and his parents at their home and our wonderful vacations at different lakes. He was part of a very important family to grow up in. Memories can never be taken away. Mala, you were very special to my dad. Love, Patti

We have known Dean almost as long as we've known Mala (whom we met in the Fall of 1960). It was Dean's curiosity that resulted in their meeting - Dean was curious about this exotic young woman in a sari who was walking across the U. Michigan campus and stopped to ask her about the sari. ... and the rest is history! That same insatiable curiosity led to may patents associated with his practical research in the Lab.
Our families were very close - back when are children were young and we all lived in Illinois, we would gather at their home almost every January for a weekend together. In later years, we would visit them in Sacramento and/or they would come to see us at our summer place in Maine. It was nearly a life-long friendship for all of us.
Dean used to say that he was not the sociable type but that did not prevent him from being concerned and loving to his family and friends. We particularly remember how involved he was in the early years of their twin granddaughters' lives. He kept them stimulated and learning by doing activities that were beyond what most toddlers do these days... and look where Zoe and Margo are today! He and Mala and we are so proud of what they have accomplished after such a good beginning.
In later years, Dean and Mala went on many adventures, especially sailing which he loved. John (Dickel) got a chance to go on one of those trips and remembers it to this day.
Dean may have been a man of few words but when he said something, you paid attention because it was wise and sensitive. We miss you, Dean!
I'll check through past photos and see if I can come up with something to add to this face book page of memories of Dean.
