Dayla's obituary

Dayla Smoland Skye-Martin passed away on September 27 in Salt Lake City, with family and friends at her bedside. She died of a hereditary rheumatoid lung-disease that was in good control for many years, but became acute during the last several months, which she spent in and out of the hospital.

She lived in the Forest Grove, Oregon area–first outside of town on Strohmayer Road, and then in town on 18th Avenue–since 1975. She was a registered nurse who worked in the Birth Center in Forest Grove Hospital for decades. After retiring from nursing, she worked at one of the original specialty coffee shops in town–Coffee Cantata–for a while, and then for Blue Cross / Blue Shield, before retiring for health reasons. She also volunteered at the Forest Grove Library.

She was born and grew up in Colorado, where she spent lots of time getting deep in the rocky mountains with her brother Paul, sister Ardyth, mother Muriel and father Dayton, and later with her husband, Paul Smoland.

She loved trips to the coast, good coffee, Celtic music, and films (e.g., anything with William Hurt, though Kevin Costner also had his moments).

After she and Paul were divorced about a decade ago, she moved to Utah to be near her son Dain and her daughter in law Hannah. She had some good adventures in her final years–staying in a yurt just outside Canyonlands National Park to see the Milky Way at night, visiting the Tetons, traveling down to Cedar City for the Shakespeare Festival, and going downtown to see the Book of Mormon (the broadway show)--and many nice casual evenings with her family and the local friends she made. She also traveled back to Oregon to see her old friends there.

She is survived by her son Dain Smoland, her brother Paul Sigler of Seattle, Washington, and her ex-husband Paul Smoland of Yamhill, Oregon (who remained a friend).
