Fun Dave Memories from Carol
Dave loved the radio station KFOG (and before that KSAN and before that KMPX) and listened often when working on his jobsites, so he was always able to call in and win lots of prizes and promotions, etc.
One of the prizes he won was tickets to see Lyle Lovett and his Large Band at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. Before the show we stopped at Old South Bar B Que on E. 14th St. in San Leandro for dinner. When Dave told the owner Charles where we were going he said Cool.
A few weeks later when Dave returned for lunch Charles said “Guess what! The night you went to that show we received a huge order from Lyle Lovett and his crew!” Coincidence?? Dave and I couldn’t remember if we were talking up the restaurant or not to anyone who would listen, but we were super happy for Charles!
Dave fell asleep on our first date at one of the Day on the Green concerts in Oakland. I guess I didn’t mind!
In about 2000, the four of us went skiing and snowboarding at Kirkwood Meadows in our 1986 4Runner. On a narrow highway a deer jumped out of the woods RIGHT in front of us, and Dave was able to avoid hitting the deer and avoid flipping the 4Runner! The girls and I were amazed! Talk about hand-eye coordination. In his prime Dave was pretty quick on the draw.
Back in late 2008 we knew something wasn’t quite right with Dave, enough to know he shouldn’t be driving long distances and other things. But he was still able to see well enough to find a pearl that had fallen off my ring after retracing our steps numerous times on the LA sidewalks and parking garage outside of the Dancing With the Stars taping we just watched. I was so happy! He wouldn’t let me forget what a hero he was and wanted to know what his prize was LOL!
How Dave’s sister Bonnie, one of my bridesmaids, was so mad at him for going out the night before with some of his groomsmen and “being out of it” on his wedding day. Again, I didn’t seem to mind!
Going to the old Sirloin n Brew restaurant in Irvington in Fremont which was close to our first house. Friend and helper Sterling would rattle off Pinocchio jokes one at a time non-stop for what seemed like hours. Hilarious!!
Dave talking about when he stayed with his sister Laurie and Jay in Provo when he was going to BYU. Laurie would sneak ice creams for him from her job. And when he was jumping up doing something crazy he landed on the corner of a table and broke his tailbone. He had to walk around with and sit on a doughnut pillow for weeks!
And when Laurie threw a knife at his back! (It bounced off!) 🤣

Fun Dad Memories from Kristin and Lauren
When he wanted to show us a trick on his new bike at the park and ended up flipping over the handlebars (on accident) and we said “Yay Daddy, do it again!”
Going to Booster Park and playing baseball with all the neighborhood kids and Dad would make us milkshakes when we got home.
He would throw us up in the air and catch us and take us on “deep sea turtle rides” at the Cabana Club pool.
When he would come home early from work and we’d all watch Sally Jesse Raphael “my wild teen is out of control!” episodes. Those were the only stories ever on that show. Then after watching the South Park parody of it, he’d always say "Whatever, I do what I WANT!”
Watching Dad play volleyball at Ohlone College and his softball league “The Good Ole Dudes”.
Going to his job sites like Supercuts and Zorba’s and collecting “coins” from electrical boxes.
When he wore Billy Bob teeth to meet Josh for the first time. He also wore them the first time he met Dan!
When he tricked me that he was playing for real money in “Vegas” mode on solitaire
When he got thrown out of Kristin’s softball game for cursing at the ump and throwing his mitt down.
When he scared away the garage sale customer by throwing up his hands and saying “Make me an offer!” while leaning back in a swivel chair wearing “beach pants”
Going to the Columbo/Toscana Bread bakery store next to the Oakland Coliseum and getting old and/or rejected sourdough bread. Storing it in the freezer and eating it toasted with cream cheese.
Going to the store, wearing aqua socks with socks!
Having special Dad dinner Fridays while Mom got her hair done, and we’d order 2 Pizza Hut pizzas with a salad and watch TGIF
Writing funny songs, like Goin’ Down to Walmart; Steve’s Mom; I’m Just a Wacko from Waco; Stop Pay the Toll.
When we were really little, he made us a water slide in the backyard using a large piece of big pvc pipe leftover from a job, the hose and a kiddie pool
He made fun jack o lantern decorations out of some big round light fixtures they were getting rid of from a Supercuts job.
One of his first jobs as a teenager was at Mother’s Cookies in Oakland. He had to clean out the shortening vats and equipment used to make the Circus animal cookies with the pink and white frosting, and clean out the fig hoses used for Fig Newtons. To this day, he could not eat Mothers cookies because of how gross his job was!
Playing Racko and Gin rummy where the queen of spades was worth 40 points
Hanging out at Dad’s “shop” which was what he called his storage unit for tools
Telling us “pioneer stories” about his ancestors when the power would go out.
When he would do that funny Three Stooges thing with his hands: snap snap clap, snap snap clap, snap snap clap, "Why soitenly! Nyuk nyuk nyuk!"
He and Buzz Adams were complaining about repetitive rap music and how everyone just says the same thing over and over again, and right as they were complaining, they were listening to Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” and she was singing the repetitive part of the song “Come on, come on, come on, come on” 🤣
He’d call me “Little Lauren Anne” in a prairie accent
When he made me believe in Santa by connecting a string to the jingle bells on the door leading to the courtyard
Mrs. Johansson stories: throwing packs of candy over the fence to Dad and his brothers, how she is supposedly buried under the house, etc.
“Santa won’t come if you don’t wipe your bottom yourself”
“If you don’t like the taste, then pinch your nose when you eat it”
Dancing in the living room to Huey Lewis and the News and listening to “The Idiot Show” with M Dung on KFOG
He would say “G-day mate” and I (L) would say “”Don’t say that!” over and over.
Making stew and oily splattery “ghetto” (pop)corn (when mom wasn’t home!), eating pistachios in front of the TV.
Trips to the Adams’ cabin where the fart jar and fart straw were invented and he carved a totem pole with a chain saw
He’d always say he was going to splash cold water on my face if I didn’t get out of bed.
Dad and Me camp with Campfire kids.
When he would always try to get me to “spill the beans” about what his Father’s Day gifts were
If you eat all your dinner, you can be a member of the clean plate society!
He would play Nintendo with the sound muted so he could listen to his own music instead
Dad gave Aubrey blank cassette tapes for Christmas and said they were Milli Vanilli albums 🤣
We were watching The Princess and the Frog and Dad said yeah this is Dr. John doing the music. We said no, it’s probably someone who sounds like him. Sure enough it was Dr. John!
Dad making yummy sandwiches on his cutting board and packing them up in the cooler to take to A’s Games, where we would park in the BART parking lot and walk over to the coliseum
How odd it was that he and his family personally knew several murderers...🧐😳🤣and Dad always loved to tell the crazy stories: their neighbor David Mason, who stole uncle Randy’s (or was it Dad's) mini bike as a child was sent to death row; he went to high school with Monte Stratten(?) one of the hit men from the Hells Angels; neighbor and church friend Sarah Mitchell, who murdered her sister Stevie Allman, stole her identity and hid her body in a fridge.
He would always discover and take us to the most hole in the wall restaurants, but they always had the most delicious food. Some that come to mind are Old South BBQ, Los Dos Gallos #2, Baldie’s Cafe
One of his favorite foods was getting gorditas and horchata from the roach coaches
Going to softball practice on Saturday mornings and stopping at Carl’s Jr. for French toast sticks on the way
Going to a Bob Dylan concert with mom where they sat next to Dylan’s old friend and roommate Wavy Gravy.
Getting pina colada and strawberry cream popsicles with the chunks of fruit from the San Jose flea market; Dove bars and Haagen Daz bars from Costco
Any excuse to drive up to Fenton’s on a whim, often meeting up with Grandma and Grandpa Hawkins
He loved driving to Jackson Rancheria and Cache Creek Indian casinos to play the dollar slots and get $1 all you can eat buffets and free mocha Frappuccinos
He made us a removable tetherball on the driveway so we could play our favorite game with the neighborhood kids
Watching Twilight Zone marathons and eating popcorn with grated cheddar cheese or Parmesan cheese; moldy cheese was even better!
“ High five... Saaaaaave it” and he’d run his hand through his hair
“Do you want to see a 52 card pick-up?”
“Hey is for horses”
Playing Nintendo with the neighborhood kids. Dad was so proud to “save the princess”
When he invented the paper folder, flo-bee , and frisbee 😅
When he dressed up as Super Chicken to promote the opening of Tune Town
