The Amazing Marge
Dave's late mother Marjorie was a very talented woman. She was an expert seamstress who sewed her daughters' clothes, and she knitted beautiful gifts for her entire family. Another skill she excelled at was creating little songs and poems for her children and grandchildren when they were born. I believe Lauren remembers her poem by heart. And yes, she wrote one for little David too and it goes like this:
Old Mr. Stork just blew his cork
The Hawkins have had a boy.
After three little girls
With braids and with curls
His father's elated with joy.
But what shall we do with him
How shall we act
Why just the same way silly mother
We'll dress him in ribbons
And bonnets and frills
And no one will know he's our
Brother.

Memories and Reflections of Dave from Carol
Dave really was a good guy. Was a little bit of a "bad boy" which made it fun, but it was tempered by his goodness from his upbringing so he never got too crazy.
Dave's mother Marge never learned to drive, maybe because she always had someone to drive her places like her children once they got their driver's licenses. Dave would tell me he "really didn't enjoy" driving his mother to the fabric store. She could shop there for hours! But he did it, because he was a good son.
If any of Dave's siblings remember this differently please let us know! LOL
One night when we were dating we had stopped at someplace on upper Fruitvale Ave. in Oakland. I had just gotten into Dave's red Chevy LUV truck when I heard this commotion coming from the rear of the truck. I could hear Dave and some other guy arguing and I was getting concerned. Dave then got into the truck and started driving away. I said what happened? What was going on? He didn't want to worry me or scare me, but he said "some guy tried to jump me but couldn't". I could tell he was mad but whew, that was close. I didn't want to press him for details so I never learned what exactly happened but I thanked him for getting us out of there!
When Kristin was born very late in the evening on January 21, 1982, it was still when new mothers and their babies stayed in the hospital for a day or two. So we weren't released until Sunday morning January 24th which just so happened to be Super Bowl XVI, the San Francisco 49ers vs the Cincinnati Bengals. Dave was mad that Al Davis was moving the Raiders to Los Angeles so he had become a 49er fan in their absence. It was so funny to see new dad Dave try his very best not to speed too badly with his newborn daughter in the car driving home from Hayward Kaiser so as not to miss the game! 😊

Going Visiting, Hawkins Style
I recall with a big smile a time about 15 to 20 years ago or so when Sandy and Troy across the street had just done some upgrades to their kitchen, either installing new cabinets or painting it. Dave's brother Randy and his wife Donna lived in Pleasanton at the time and they were getting ready to do the same thing.
Randy and Donna came over one evening and we greeted them on the driveway. Dave told them "our neighbors just got new cabinets for their kitchen (or painted it, sorry can't remember which) and they look really nice. I bet they'd let you look to get some ideas." I said "Dave, they're probably eating dinner or something." He said "That's OK, I'll check."
I thought oh boy, here we go. I hope he doesn't disturb them. Dave chatted with Sandy for a little bit at their front door then turned around and motioned to us on the driveway. My sister in law Donna said with a laugh and a smile "There it is, the 'Hawkins waive over'!" I knew exactly what she meant. Dave's late father Grant would often go visiting friends and family while his large brood waited in the wings. After the homeowner said OK he would "waive them over."
This ran in his family. Grant and Dave were simply friendly types who weren't afraid or shy to reach out to people. Sometimes, due to my antisocial tendencies at times, I would worry that Dave would be bothering people. But Dave, along with his father, would do things like this because he was a genuinely nice person. ❤😊
