Dear Gater family, I'm truly sorry to hear of David's passing, but glad to hear he knew Our Lord and am comforted by this. I knew him in a professional capacity, putting grants together for him. He was always kind, quiet, highly organized, and you could tell he was a compassionate man - his eyes were always smiling!
Felicia, thank you for posting all the pics! I knew there had to be a wild side to him, obviously, it was just below the surface! What a wonderful, caring, brilliant, funny/goofy man he was. Thank you for sharing those pics - it tells the full story of who he really was. He will be missed, but will forever be in our hearts. I suspect he has Jesus rolling on the floor with his puns, funny faces, and humor! Until we see you again, Dear David. 🙏😇

I had the privilege of meeting Dave and Denise at an ACSM conference in 2015 through my professors the MacRae's. What a blessing. Since then, Dave has consistently continued to check in on me and would send me words of encouragement out of the blue at exactly the times I needed it!! We recently reconnected over mutual interest in spinal cord injury, and he was a tremendous help with career ideas. I am crushed at this loss and will be forever impacted by the way Dave loved others, lived wholeheartedly, and never ever hesitated to remind you that you mattered in this world. I hope to carry on his legacy by living and loving in the same way. I have never met anyone who has loved harder.
My heart goes out to you, Denise, and the family.

Dear Denise and family, while we’ve never met, David was a part of my life as a clinician and friend. My deepest condolences, I’m somewhat numbed by the news, he just bought my entourage dinner in Louisville, after he asked to be join us!? May David rest in power, and you all carry forth his light and spirit for those less fortunate. All my love. Sasha

I first met David on my first day at the University of Arizona. I was 18 years old, going to a school where I knew absolutely no one and 2700 miles away from where I grew up. I had dropped off my suitcase in my room and went back down to the common room in the dorm. The TV was playing highlights of the previous year’s football season, and this blonde haired, body builder looking guy comes into the common room, grabs a cushion off one of the couches, puts in on the floor and starts doing hand stand push-ups. I thought to myself, “Great, I am in the football player dorm. I am going to get my butt kicked all year.” The body builder finishes doing his pushups, comes over to me and introduces himself as Dave Gater. He wound becoming a friend while I was school.

I am honored to be a friend of David. I went to high school and was a team mate on the wrestling & track teams. Even in high school David was always a good friend to all so it’s no surprise to see how he lived his life and all the great things he accomplished. Loving family, co-workers & friends you will be greatly missed my friend. I will miss your spiritual happy birthday postings every year without fail. GOD bless and my condolences.
