Happy birthday today, Dr. Gater. Although you're not here, I'm sure your family will celebrate your life today. I'm thinking of you today with fond memories of working with you on grants. You were a kind, gentle man with respect for all who worked with you! You always made me feel valued and I will never forget that.
Prayers to your family on this special day. 🙏

I thought about Dr Gater randomly today and looked him up only to find to my shock that he had passed away over a year ago. Denise and family I am very sorry for your loss. I worked with him at University of Michigan. Learned a lot from him which I passed on to the nurses who worked on the Rehab unit. He was gifted.

I was deeply saddened and shocked to hear of David’s passing! I was blessed to have crossed paths with him during my PM&R residency here in Lexington, KY at UK. May the peace of Jesus surround the family at this time.

I wanted to share my condolences to Dr. Gater's family after learning of his passing today. I met Dr. Gater during residency interviews and was always excited to see and hear him speak at conferences over the last few years. He was such an inspiration in the PM&R field and his charisma to teach, learn and collaborate will truly be missed.

I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of David's passing. We were co-residents in the U of A Tucson internship, 30 years ago and we kept in touch through the medical societies for the last 3 years since he moved to Florida with his family. I was looking forward to see him and his wife again, in Florida where I live. I am so sorry for the loss of this great doctor, great husband and great father. David was the most encouraging and optimistic colleague I ever had. A great friend indeed!
Rest In Peace, my friend!

Dave and Denise were very special people in my life. During my college years they took me to dinner every Tuesday night and shared their life stories. These were some of the highest highs and lowest lows that life has to offer. We also traveled, hiked, skied and prayed together. I cherish these memories always. And have been inspired to pass on this generosity, keeping Dave’s warmth and kindness alive forever.

I met Dave and Denise when I was in college at U of A, introduced to them through the YoungLife community. They entrusted me to care for their first baby a few afternoons a week, giving me a glimpse of their lives of great faith and their beautiful marriage. Even in the midst of having a newborn and Dave harried by medical school, they were thoughtful and intentional about getting to know me. This started a friendship for many years to come. As the years went by, they would make the effort to reach out to me when back in California to visit, keeping tabs on my life milestones, pouring out God's wisdom and love at every step. I remember a specific time when I was newly married and Dave and Denise were in town and Dave and I went on a walk. I was reminded that conversations with him were simultaneously interesting, challenging and insightful (and sprinkled with a few cheesy puns of course!)
I will always appreciate Dave as an excellent listener, wise mentor, brilliant and compassionate doctor, devoted husband and loving father. He will always be a gem in my eyes!

Devastated..
Dr Gater was my neurologist at Hershey and I'll never forget his words.. "Jeremy, I want you to stay alive" with a warm smile, when discussing keeping up with my health, due to living in a wheelchair. When he moved to Miami in 2019, I was selfishly saddened. It took me 20 years to find a neurologist I could trust and depend on. He made sure to have me up the week before he left so we could say our goodbyes/well wishes. He spoke so highly of his wife and family. I'm so very sorry for all that suffered his loss, including his family, friends, colleagues and patients. The only reason I knew of his passing was because of a Google search to seek out if he could telehealth me from Pennsylvania and be my Neuro again. Sweetest caring, professional man so very glad I got to know him, from a man he helped greatly. Thanks Dr Gater.

As a Masters student and before first child, David said to me "My goal is to be the best husband, best father, and best doctor I can be." I think you did it, my friend. I'm blessed to have crossed paths with you and will always miss you. Thank you for sharing your time, love, and guidance.
Thinking of you all and sending love and strength.
