David's obituary
David John "Dave" Bennett III passed away at his home in Springfield, Pennsylvania, on March 22, 2025, of esophageal cancer. He was 76 years old.
Known affectionately as “The Dave” among friends—because he refused to be just “the other Dave”—he was truly one of a kind. His wit, intellect, and presence made him unforgettable in every circle he moved through.
Born on November 16, 1948, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Dave was the son of David John Bennett Jr., a longtime radio and television professional, and Elizabeth Hall Hughes Bennett, a dedicated social worker. From an early age, Dave was drawn to music. He eagerly scavenged through discarded records from his father's station and developed an eclectic taste that spanned genres. But it was James Brown, Funk, and Chicago Blues that electrified him—and ultimately led him to pick up the bass guitar.
Though photography paid the bills—he worked professionally behind the lens for many years—it was music that nourished Dave’s soul. A gifted bass player with impeccable rhythm and heart, he played in numerous bands over the years, including Flip the Chicken; The Rent Party Band; The Non-prophets; LG and the Road Dogs; and Beaufort. His musical talent was matched only by his passion for sharing it with others.
A voracious reader and lifelong seeker of knowledge, Dave devoured everything from fiction and biographies to complex works on physics and cosmology. He had an insatiable curiosity about the world around him. Despite his deep intellect, he wore it lightly—he seemed like a regular guy but could hold court on just about any topic.
Dave’s journey included struggles as well as triumphs. After years of what he called “suicide by alcohol,” he underwent a liver transplant—a transformative experience that shifted his perspective profoundly. Though not religious, Dave often expressed gratitude for what he described as “unearned good fortune,” embracing life with humility and a renewed sense of purpose.
In 2005, Dave met Patti Davis at a house concert. They fell in love during a music jam session—a fitting beginning for two people whose lives would become beautifully intertwined through shared melodies and harmonies. They married in Las Vegas in 2012 (deliberately avoiding Elvis at Patti’s insistence), building a life filled with laughter, love, music, adventure, and friends.
Together they enjoyed old movies—one of Dave’s enduring passions—as well as Formula One racing and the Tour de France. Their annual pre-Thanksgiving party became legendary among friends: Patti meticulously planned every detail while Dave took a more relaxed approach: “Just open the door,” he’d say, “and f**k ‘em if they don’t bring turkeys.” It was at these gatherings that Dave shined brightest—holding court at the center of laughter and conversation.
Dave Bennett was as solid as his bass lines—deeply rooted yet full of soul. His creativity, warmth, humor, intelligence, and kindness touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will continue to resonate like a favorite song long after the final note has faded.
Dave leaves behind his beloved wife Patti Davis; stepson T.C. Davis (Julia Rabinovich); sister Barbara Chappelle (Bob); nephews Jamie and David (Anna); grandnieces and grandnephews; the entire McCabe family; and an expansive community of fellow musicians and dear friends who cherished him deeply.
