I am so shocked and devastated to learn of Danny’s passing. We became buddies because I worked at the dental office he came to and he was such a delight to know. Whenever I’d see his name on the schedule I knew I’d have a happy day and that I’d get to talk with him and get updates on his travels and new home. He was a uniquely special person and was so adored by everyone in the office. I will miss him always and feel so lucky that I knew that sweet man.

My deepest condolences to Danny’s family and dear friends. I am heartbroken at the loss of him and find it hard to believe that we will not share any more experiences, or strong opinions, in this life together.
Danny was like family to me, I loved him as another brother. We shared so many amazing meals together and one of my all time favorite was at Lazy Bear when I was in SF for work. He treated me to the whole experience (he was always so generous), so we met for drinks and some bites first, before getting seated downstairs across from each other at the large table. We got lucky to be at the head so I had a front row seat to the entire presentation and he was so happy that happened for my first time there. We must have asked for extra butter 4x; it was the absolute best butter I’ve ever had and the last text I ever sent to him was about that butter. When dessert came they served coffee in a mini porron and I was thrilled to show him something for a change! I spilled it all over my sweater but the joy on his face and how we laughed was so worth it. I loved his laugh. As dinner was wrapping up Dan asked if I wanted to have more dinner or more dessert. He made follow up reservations at 2 separate places so that he was prepared for whatever my answer was. What a plan! It was dessert so he took me to have his favorite Baked Alaska. What a treat that was and what an amazing night!
When I got married, Dan bought me and my husband our espresso machine. It was the one thing I pushed to put on the registry so that we could buy it for ourselves on discount when no one did. I was sure no one would. Every day when I make coffee, I think of you, Dan. I’m sorry I never came to Austin to visit. I wish I did. And I wish you could have met Mia. Until we meet again….I’ll miss you so much.

Danny always made time to come to our family events no matter where he was living or visiting at the time. This was a surprise 60th birthday party for Mr. F

Danny always shared photos of his many trips. This is one of my favorites with his mom! He took such good care of her!

I only got to know Dan in the past few months, but he was such a charming, warm and funny guy. I'm heartbroken that I won't get to know him better. I won't be able to see a dinosaur without thinking about him. He'll be missed more than he knows.

2016, Franklin Barbecue, East 11th Street, Austin, TX, USA
This was my first trip to Franklin Barbecue and I loved every minute of waiting for this incredible BBQ with Dan. We had a blast while on line just talking and then the food was incredible. It was a great end to the long morning. I bought a Franklin BBQ t-shirt during this visit that I still wear to this day.

Danny and I wanted to see each other and decided to meet in the middle of the country. We flew into Austin and took a day trip to San Antonio. It was the first time either of us were in San Antonio and we were blown away by the food scene. We hit up a few great spots (Cured was most notable) and took a great walk by the river. Even though it was incredibly hot, we had a great time and enjoyed our iced coffee pit stop in this lush little grove.

On this trek across the Brooklyn Bridge, Danny thought it was funny to capture me trying to take a selfie of myself on the bridge - selfies of other people taking selfies was funny to us at the time (we were mimicking a friend who was taking pictures of people taking pictures of food). Danny is wearing his Pixar Animation hat. He also bought me the same hat in green and it's the only hat I wear. I love that hat and I think of him everytime I put it on. Dan and I both loved Pixar films and Pixar's culture. Dan went to a few private screenings at Pixar which I was soooo jealous of, but he always sent me something special from Pixar so I wouldn't feel left out. An illustration from WALL-E that Dan got me hangs prominently in my son's room and a t-shirt from Good Dinosaur is part of my favorite summer attire.

Dan was at a wedding and sent me his impression of an ironic advertisement for La Croix.

I went out to visit Danny a few months after Louisa was born. It was only for a long weekend, but I was so gracious that Caitrin was supportive and that Danny planned an itinerary where we were able to just hang out. We went for a long walk on this day and recalled how we rode bikes over the Golden Gate Bridge back in 2003 with next to zero visibility. Look how clear it was now! We ate really well on this trip - one day we went for two dinners just to pack in all the restaurants we wanted to hit!

Danny couldn't get over the fact that this drink at Sunday in Brooklyn was served in a honey bear. We spoke about it for most of the meal and he asked about the drink any time we spoke about the restaurant. That the straw perfectly fit into the hole of the honey bear cap was absolute perfection to him!

Just after the Apple Store opened in Williamsburg, Danny flew in for a visit. He knew the guy who cut the Apple signage, so wanted me to take this picture so he could share with the folks back at Apple. We had a great family dinner during this trip where my parents and my sister met Danny, Caitrin, and me at Antica Pesa for yet another memorable meal together.

During Danny's 40th birthday visit to NYC we rounded out one of our days together with a round of gelato with the kids. We thought it was hilarious how Louisa and Dan had matching Patagonia vests - Louisa has always had great taste!

2019, Torres del Paine National Park, Chile
Danny took a National Geographic (I think it was organized by them) tour of Patagonia. He said he was the youngest person on the tour by at least 20 years, but loved every minute with the wonderful people on that trip. Pictured behind them are the Towers of Paine, an incredible sight that few people see because of how remote it is. I remember a story Danny told me about one of the couples on the trip - they really wanted to visit one of the stops on the trip (I can't remember the name of the landmark), but they were unable to because of the inclement weather. While Dan brushed off the news, the wife began to sob when she heard the updated itinerary. Dan inquired about the reaction with the husband and he replied that his wife is heartbroken because now she will never see this landmark. This was the last time the couple was going to be able to make this trip in their lifetime and this hope, this wish, this desire this woman had would not be fulfilled. It really struck Danny (and me when I heard the story) that the couple knew at that point they would not be able to see this place in their lifetime and mourned it - we always thought we would have more time and never thought about the finality of what you can do in a lifetime. What were those things that we wanted to do and accomplish in our life? Dan resolved to see even more of the world with the people he loved in honor of that couple.

Dan was so proud of his job at Apple. He was responsible for the iPhone from a finance perspective - the whole supply chain, manufacturing, sales, etc. Seeing people using his product gave him such a sense of pride. Dan flew in late for our wedding in 2011 because there was an important board meeting that he was preparing for where they were asking for a budget north of $1B for the next iPhone. That the things he worked on got in front of Apple's board was another sense of pride for him. Once he sent me a panorama of his desk at Apple. I loved that the Snoopy I got him (affectionately called "Dog Breath") was front and center along with a bunch of things that Danny loved - the MC Escher reptiles, the lightbulb in glass, a wild thing from Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, the lion made of metal wire (which I think he bought outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art), the NYC Fire Department badge, a picture of Danny with Bryan Sampson's dog (which he loved so much), his Bang & Olufsen headphones, Filemaker book, and of course the latest iPhone spec. Dan was so detail oriented and had such an eye for the things he collected and kept around him. I always felt so special that I was among those things.

Danny visited NY in the fall and brought along his gnome that he had started traveling with. The gnome (I can't recall his name) was starting to rack up the miles but had not been to NYC yet, so we took him on a tour of the city. Here we were on the Brooklyn Bridge giggling silly as everyone walked by two guys holding a gnome in the middle of the bridge. Dan created a website for the gnome, I think it was gnometrotter.com (creative, as usual), and created a page for each location complete with pictures and a first person narrative. I loved checking in on the gnome's latest adventures!

In Zion National Park we hiked the Riverside Walk and then went upstream in the Virgin River to try to find the narrows. We hiked for hours and eventually turned back after taking a long break at a pool in the river. It was Danny and Gabi's first time to Zion - hiking the river with the sheer rock walls around you is particularly special.

Danny and Gabi were taking a moment before we turned around to hike back down the river. The pool was so tranquil - no one was there except for us. The air was warm but there was shade from the canyon and the water was cold to the touch. By this point, Gabi's blister was well on its way from all the walking with wet shoes on!

At Bryce Canyon, we hiked Fairyland Loop. Gabi had developed a massive blister on his left heel from the hike in the river at Zion. Dan and I teased him relentlessly that he couldn't keep up or that he was complaining too much, but we were both saying to each other how impressed we were that he was even on the hike with the size of the blister he had. Dan could always laugh, but was so compassionate.
