No words can express my depth of sadness when I learned Dan was gone last Saturday. We didn't grow up close together but I always looked forward to seeing him every few years as we spent summers at the lakes and rivers of Oregon and horsing around at our grandma's house. Dan and my brother would spend endless hours catching "crawdads" and releasing them. He was always up for giving me airplane rides. Through his teens into young adulthood there were some dark times but we reconnected as Dan was finishing up his PhD. Since then we have made it a point to catch up every few years. Despite his sometimes flinty exterior Dan had the biggest heart and was the most loyal friend and cousin. He was so excited to meet his little cousin, Bruce, a couple of years ago. We will miss him. Christ (as Dan would say), we will miss him.

I didn't have the luxury of knowing Dan for as long as I would have liked to. I only just got to know him over the year or so that we worked together, but in that year he taught me more than I could have ever even thought. Dan always had such a different outlook on life and his brilliance never ceased to amaze me in anyway. Dan treated me like family after his first 20-minute phone call with me, most of which was him talking words I didn't understand, but that was just Dan he loved to talk. Dan made an impact on me that I will never forget and taught me values of self-worth that have sculpted me into a stronger person. Rest in peace my friend; hope to see you again one day.Β
Dear Rachel, I am so sad and so sorry to hear the news of your husband’s passing. He was such Β an accomplished man and seems to have been so well loved. I am praying for you and your family. Β My love and prayers are with you. Β β€οΈπŸ™πŸ»
