Dear Rachel, sending you love and strength at this difficult time. You have always spoken so fondly of Dan - it was so clear what a very special relationship you had and how devoted you were to each other. My deepest condolences Carly x
A special guy, that was all heart. I worked with Dan for several years back at Columbia University. He was hilarious to work with, he would understand things that others were just baffled about (and fix them on the spot), and he would not take any nonsense... We need more people like Dan, not less :( I will miss him a lot.

Dan was a uniquely brilliant and funny person and scientist.  The world will miss him dearly.

Dear Rachel,

Dan always spoke so fondly about you during the time that I interacted with him at Columbia. I know that he will be greatly missed. Thank you for sharing this memorial.

My deepest condolences to you and your family,

Christine Garcia

Dan and I have been in each other’s lives since 1996, when we met in our first year at university. The pattern for our friendship was set when we were alone together in college towards the end of the Christmas holidays that year before others came back. As we sat in the quad smoking, Dan came out with unprompted tirades against private schooling and organised religion. Following my response, he was always able to list perfectly the private schools my parents (both church ministers), brother, and I attended.

Over the years, we remained close whether we were in the same country or not. It was lovely to overlap in Cambridge in 2010-2013, when I was able to see Dan and Rachel (the very best thing to happen to him in his life) all the time, and we managed to meet up in the US, Canada, and UK after they moved to the States, and kept in touch constantly on whatsapp.

Dan was an endless worry and a massive nuisance but also funny and kind and irritatingly clever and one of the very closest and most important people in my life. He was the only friend I ever shouted at (which I did regularly) and I cannot quite comprehend life without him in it.

Rachel - thank you for bringing Dan so much love and stability. I am so terribly sorry for your loss. xx

A perda do meu genro querido me abalou profundamente. Convivi com ele bastante tempo e sempre o admirei por sua competência profissional , inteligência e humildade/ simplicidade.sempre me tratou com mto carinho e admiração. DAN , vc ficará eternamente gravado no meu coração  . Te amo pra sempre.
I am so shocked to hear this. Even though I had not met Daniel in a long time and had barely exchanged messages  with him in the last seven years, every thought of Daniel made me smile over the years. He was one talented bioinformatician and his talent sparked bright  not only through his work, but also through his courage. He is one of the very few colleagues  i had, who stood up for his friends and gave two hoots about being fired. One confession to make also, I stopped writing C code on white boards precisely because Daniel's tolerance for bad C code was quite low. I seriously hope, there is no badly written C code in heaven, cause he is going to make everyone's life  hell there.  But then again,  knowing Daniel as I knew him, everyone will definitely be smiling in heaven right now! My deepest condolences for this loss to the family and really wish  the very best to all of you.

Dear Rachel,

My deepest condolences to you and Dan’s family & loved ones. Thinking of you and sending my support during this difficult time.

I’m here if you need anything.

Sonya

I am sorry to hear about Dan's passing. He was a very talented person who made a significant contribution in healthcare. His work was critical in developing some of the platforms that are still being worked on today. He made an impact with all those who knew him and will be missed by all.
