I knew Dan from his appearances on the 1900HOTDOG podcast. I always loved his episodes, he obviously got along so well with the rest of the cast and was a delight to listen to. Gone FAR too soon. Sending lots of love to Jan, Simon and the rest of his family

Dan was so supportive when I pitched Defector, even though we'd only barely met, and he reached out to talk about my story even though he was going through treatment at the time. He kept on texting me about bin stores for months; it was so fun to connect with someone who could appreciate a truly niche obsession. I wish I'd gotten to know him sooner, he was an incredible writer, such a generous person, creative to the very core. I'm so sorry for your loss, and thinking of your family.

Dan was truly a one of one human being. We are all so grateful that his love for highly coveted shoes brought him into our lives. We will miss he jokes, his stories and how excited he always was to buy a new pair of sneakers. We were lucky the internet brought us all together. - Love SIFTS

Jan, as so many have said, Dan was such a special, one-of-a-kind person and friend. You were both so welcoming when we moved to Philadelphia, and showed us the magic of this city. I feel extremely lucky to have known him, and to have experienced his friendship and to have gotten to see Philly (and beyond) through his eyes both through that friendship and through his writing. The last time I saw him, back in November, he was showing me pictures of Simon and absolutely glowing. John and I are thinking of you and Simon a lot, sending you so much love.

I knew Dan back when we were literal next door neighbors at Hill House at Penn. We kept in touch until the very end. One of his favorite moments in undergrad was sneaking in a reference to "QB Eagles" in one of the April Fool's articles for the Daily Pennsylvanian. Best wishes to Jan and Simon

Dan was the coolest, and his byline on anything was an automatic click. He didn’t know I existed but he brightened my day so many times nonetheless. RIP

My condolences on Dan's passing. While we never met, we shared being UofP and DP alumni. I appreciate the unique perspective he brought to his reporting and writing and, from I understand, to how he lived life. May he rest in peace and you find comfort during this difficult time. 🙏

Dan, like many others, spoke to that part of me that was so weirdly in love with being a Philadelphian. In a life where I’ve been so angry, he reminded me why the smallest thing are reasons to be joyful. His legend will live beyond us all

He was a wonderful writer and one of the reasons I subscribed to Defector. I am so so sorry for your loss

One of my favorite defector writers. I know nothing can dampen the grief aside from time, but hopefully the fund can help alleviate some other worries that you don’t need at this point in your journey. Wishing you peace and love.

Dan was the best at writing about and sharing all the small things in life that he cared about and valued, which ever single time reminded me that I too cared about those things and their manifestation in my own life. His writing was a variation of stopping and smelling the roses. He will be missed but he will be appreciate for all time through his writing.

Having read Dan's words for so many years across Deadspin and Defector, I always loved his wonder at the world around him. No matter how seemingly serious or silly the topic, he put his whole self into the piece, resulting in a singular voice that will never be duplicated or replicated. May his memory be a blessing to Jan, Simon, his friends, and family, and may we all learn to approach the world around us with even 10% of Dan's vim and vigor.

It was always a delight to read Dan's insights and opinions--so much of the good stuff of humanity always came through. His intelligence, humor, values, and just general joy in expressing himself no matter what he was writing about.
My condolences to all who loved him and may his memory be a blessing to you.
