I remember talking one time in small group about the woman at the well, and you could tell Cory was bursting to say something. KJ looked at him and said, "I know what you're about to say," and Cory replied, "She wasn't afraid to ask for help." I love all parts of that little moment, including the melding between two people who love each other and a smart, successful banker-Ph.D. pointing out the importance of vulnerability.

World's First Smart Shell for Feedback Control in a Tokamak

Cory designed, developed, and tested the world's first "smart shell" to control instabilities in tokamaks. His work was important and trail-blazing. As a colleague at Columbia University, I remember Cory as a clear-thinking scientist who was devoted to his loving family and knew how to balance life as a scientist with his life as a Dad.

Lord, we call upon You in this time of sorrow, that You give Kari Jo, their children, and the rest of their family the strength and peace to bear this heavy burden and suffering. We ask that despite the difficult loss, despite the urge to ask why, their trust in You remains steadfast and they can feel the warmth of Your love, mercy, and compassion. When they can, we ask that You allow them to celebrate Cory's life, as a servant to You, a husband, father, son, bother in Christ, friend, co-worker, and many more. The short period I got to know him as the leader of a community group, I was so impressed by his hospitality and his leadership of the loving family. I pray that all of us along with the family, while we have lost a brother on earth, we have the assurance in our hearts that Cory is alive with the Lord now. All these in Your precious name. Amen.

Kari Jo and family,
Although I never met Cory, I feel I learned so much about love and fellowship through glimpses of photos and posts on social media from Kari Jo. You all are a special family, one that others look up to. Knowing you have loved and lived every day is the best gift. I know condolences will never be enough to ease your pain, but please know you are loved and thought of.

Cory was one of the most memorable people I worked with at Credit Suisse about 20yrs ago.
Sorry for your loss.

I only knew Cory through our work together, but I felt a close, personal connection with him all the same. He had that effect on people. His generous and patient spirit encouraged everyone he interacted with. I am shocked and deeply saddened by his passing. It has reminded me that making a positive difference isn’t something that happens sometime later. It’s now, in the day-in and day-out of life, the daily interactions at work, at home, and elsewhere, that we make a difference. Cory exemplified that well and I can only hope to have the same kind of positive impact on the people I love and those I work with as he did.
