Concepción's obituary
Born on December 20, 1955 in Chihuahua, Mexico to Cruz and Jesus Barrio, Concepcion Barrio passed peacefully in her sleep at home on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The first of six children, Concha is survived by four sisters, husband Donald J. Kinda, her dog Moony, and an adoring group of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends. A proud immigrant, she was a caretaker and memory-keeper for her siblings and, with boundless heart, continued to be so for future nietos, mentees, and colleagues. A butterfly-lover with a sharp mind, she actively published widely and left a mark on Los Angeles mental health advocacy and academic communities at USC and San Diego State University—where she met her first husband, James Ajemian, with whom she spent 20 cherished years until his passing in 2018. Concha’s passing has shaken an unfathomably wide network of people because of the unparalleled fierceness of her care. We will miss the laughter, insight, and honesty her bright presence brought to the world and celebrate all the good her life put into motion.
