Charlotte's obituary
NPAP
With great sadness we inform you of the death of Dr. Charlotte Kahn. Charlotte was Asst. Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Mt Sinai Medical Center where she supervised residents and fellows in the Department of Psychiatry. She was the 2020 recipient of the Louis Linn Teaching Award.
Charlotte trained with such psychoanalytic pioneers as Theodore Reik and went on to a distinguished career as a psychoanalyst, supervisor of generations of students, and author of numerous books, articles, and curricula. Her unquenchable curiosity led her to research such subjects as the creative process, the psychodynamics of twins, and the personality characteristics of maverick 1970s career women. Charlotte’s own history as a refugee led her to publish many books on psychohistorical topics, such as mass migration, multigenerational transmission, German reunification, the resurgence of Jewish life in Germany, and the psychological appeal of fascism, topics that remain relevant today.
Charlotte served as an Editorial Board Member and Special Issue Coordinator of the Psychoanalytic Review, and sat on the Steering Committee that founded the Edith Laufer Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study Center for the Treatment of Brain Injury. In 2023, with co-author Dr. Mary Edlow, Charlotte published “Reparative Adaptation After Brain Injury Facilitated by Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
In addition to her roles as a therapist and author, Charlotte held tenured college and university faculty appointments, including Director of the Marriage and Family Counseling Program at Syracuse University. Her passion for teaching led to roles as a clinical supervisor at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, NPAP, and the Harlem Family Institute. Charlotte also appeared as a guest on radio and television talk shows in connection with her work as a family therapist.
Charlotte will be remembered by the many students, patients and colleagues whose lives she touched.
Funeral will take place on Sunday November 30th at 11:00 a.m. at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, 630 Amsterdam Avenue.
The service will be live-streamed at https://www.plazajewishcommun….
