2023, Guilford, CT, USA
On Saturday, March 18 we celebrated Charlie’s life at the First Congregational Church. It was so heartening to see so many people show up and share their stories of how much Charlie meant to them. It was very clear he was well loved by everyone he met but also how much he loved everyone back. Charlie was an athlete, an artist, a philosopher, a nature lover, an animal lover and so much more. He embraced life to the fullest, perhaps that’s what made it so overwhelming. While we will never know the struggles he was feeling, this service gave us permission to give ourselves grace for not knowing. Charlie, we hope wherever you are in the afterlife, you finally feel peace. Through us, your memory will live on.

Today on a whim I went to meet a friend to watch some live music, knowing nothing about the bands who were playing. The moment I walked in a  song called “Charlie” started playing. The universe is funny like that. Made me happy and sad at the same time. I wanted to leave the song here in case anyone else needed a good simultaneous smile/cry.

You'll always have a seat at the bar and in our hearts. #CrystalLakeBrooklyn
I've already wrote something prior, but after this service I feel so much more needs to be said; not just for those who were able to attend but especially for those who weren't able to attend. The service solidified what I've always assumed, no matter if you grew up with Charlie, just met him, knew him for years, played sports with him, worked with him, etc. No matter how you knew Charlie, no matter how long you knew Charlie he was the same Charlie. What I took away from the service and I hope you all were able to take away as well Charlie was complex but within his complexity the core of who he was has always been based in love. Love for nature, love for competition, love for family, love for friends, love for animals, love for expression. I want to express to those who weren't able to attend - take a breath, forgive, remember the memories and the moments that you shared with Charlie: "know this weight will pass, and however long it takes, give yourself kindness, give yourself grace ."

The quality of this photo isn't great but, the memory is what counts... Charlie loved this ficus plant. It was a baby in his UES apartment, and grew to be quite large over many years eventually with him and Megan in Brooklyn. This was Christmas, 2015, when it served as a Christmas Ficus

I met Charlie in the fall of 2019 playing on the most epic softball team of all time, also known as Pumps. Charlie gave everything he had on the field, to the point he had to come out one game from an injury. That is where I first got to know Charlie, on the Pumps bench.

Charlie, Megan, Ricky, and I clicked immediately. Dinners, hikes, road trips, vacations, late night talks about life. During the pandemic, Charlie insisted on making a traditional Thanksgiving for us. It was clear he came from a family that valued warmth and togetherness.

Over the years, I learned that Charlie brought that same exuberance from the field to everything he cared about: his career, finding the right vibe music on road trips, and his love for Megan.

"What's your favorite place?"

"I don't have a favorite place.

I have my favorite people.

And, whenever I'm with my favorite people, it becomes my favorite place."
